17 Jesus spoke these things, and, raising his eyes to heaven, he said: "Father, the hour has come; glorify your son, that your son may glorify you, 2 according as you have given him authority over all flesh, that, as regards the whole [number] whom you have given him, he may give them everlasting life. 3 This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, [Psalms 83:18] and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ. 4 I have glorified you on the earth, having finished the work you have given me to do.

(1) After Jesus had finished speaking to his disciples, he looked up toward heaven and prayed: Father, the time has come for you to bring glory to your Son, in order that he may bring glory to you. (2) And you gave him power over all people, so that he would give eternal life to everyone you give him. (3) Eternal life is to know you, the only true God, [Psalms 83:18] and to know Jesus Christ, the one you sent. (4) I have brought glory to you here on earth by doing everything you gave me to do.
