John 7:14-18 CEV
(14) When the festival was about half over, Jesus went into the temple and started teaching. (15) The leaders were surprised and said, "How does this man know so much? He has never been taught!" (16) Jesus replied: I am not teaching something that I thought up. What I teach comes from the one who sent me. (17) If you really want to obey God, you will know if what I teach comes from God or from me. (18) If I wanted to bring honor to myself, I would speak for myself. But I want to honor the one who sent me. That is why I tell the truth and not a lie.

14 When by now the festival was half over, Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. 15 Therefore the Jews fell to wondering, saying: "How does this man have a knowledge of letters, when he has not studied at the schools?" 16 Jesus, in turn, answered them and said: "What I teach is not mine, but belongs to him that sent me. 17 If anyone desires to do His will, he will know concerning the teaching whether it is from God or I speak of my own originality. 18 He that speaks of his own originality is seeking his own glory; but he that seeks the glory of him that sent him, this one is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

The festival was nearly half over when Jesus went to the Temple and began teaching. (15) The Jewish authorities were greatly surprised and said, "How does this man know so much when he has never been to school?" (16) Jesus answered, "What I teach is not my own teaching, but it comes from God, who sent me. (17) Whoever is willing to do what God wants will know whether what I teach comes from God or whether I speak on my own authority. (18) Those who speak on their own authority are trying to gain glory for themselves. But he who wants glory for the one who sent him is honest, and there is nothing false in him.

[or, How is this One learned, not having been educated?] (16) Therefore, Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not mine, _but_ of the One having sent Me. (17) "If anyone is willing to be doing His will, he will know concerning such teaching, whether it is from God or [whether] _I_ speak from Myself. (18) "The one speaking from himself seeks his own glory, but the One seeking the glory of the One having sent Him, this One is true, and unrighteousness is not in Him.

(16) Jesus gave them this answer: It is not my teaching, but his who sent me. (17) If any man is ready to do God's pleasure he will have knowledge of the teaching and of where it comes from--from God or from myself. (18) The man whose words come from himself is looking for glory for himself, but he who is looking for the glory of him who sent him--that man is true and there is no evil in him.
