Philippians 1:9 LITV
(9) And this I pray, that your love may yet abound more and more in full knowledge and all perception,

Philippians 1:9 ASV
(9) And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment;

The translation of this Bible verse can help us understand something important about translations: The Bible, as given mankind by God, (2 Peter 1:21 ; Zephaniah 3:9 ; Hebrews 4:12) was originally written down in the Hebrew and Greek languages. The original Bible was inspired by God and is beneficial for our spiritual health. (2 Timothy 3:16) Those of us who do not fluently read ancient Hebrew and Greek, are all dependant on some translation of the Bible. Those translation efforts were likely not inspired by God. We certainly have no means of knowing they were inspired. Most accredited translations were no doubt done by sincere men and women. The truth can be gleaned from any sincere translation effort. We should never, however, get caught up in attributing special meaning or signifigance to some particualr word or phrase. Read the Bible with the intent of getting the thoughts being conveyed. The various translators of Phillipians 1:9 used several different words as they attempted to convey what that original greek scripture taught. You can see that if you simply read to get the meaning, all these translations convey the same basic thought. The fact is: It is much safer to consider several translations in the case of any scripture which seems hard to understand. The message conveyed in the different translations are still the inspired word of God (just a translation of it). All of them can bestow wisdom upon you. (Proverbs 4:7-9)

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
