1 Samuel 15:1-35 GNB Samuel said to Saul, "I am the one whom the LORD  ( יהוה ) sent to anoint you king of his people Israel. Now listen to what the LORD  ( יהוה ) Almighty says. (2) He is going to punish the people of Amalek because their ancestors opposed the Israelites when they were coming from Egypt. (3) Go and attack the Amalekites and completely destroy everything they have. Don't leave a thing; kill all the men, women, children, and babies; the cattle, sheep, camels, and donkeys." (4) Saul called his forces together and inspected them at Telem: there were 200,000 soldiers from Israel and 10,000 from Judah. (5) Then he and his men went to the city of Amalek and waited in ambush in a dry riverbed. (6) He sent a warning to the Kenites, a people whose ancestors had been kind to the Israelites when they came from Egypt: "Go away and leave the Amalekites, so that I won't kill you along with them." So the Kenites left. (7) Saul defeated the Amalekites, fighting all the way from Havilah to Shur, east of Egypt; (8) he captured King Agag of Amalek alive and killed all the people. (9) But Saul and his men spared Agag's life and did not kill the best sheep and cattle, the best calves and lambs, or anything else that was good; they destroyed only what was useless or worthless. (10) The LORD  ( יהוה ) said to Samuel, (11) "I am sorry that I made Saul king; he has turned away from me and disobeyed my commands." Samuel was angry, and all night long he pleaded with the LORD  ( יהוה ). (12) Early the following morning he went off to find Saul. He heard that Saul had gone to the town of Carmel, where he had built a monument to himself, and then had gone on to Gilgal. (13) Samuel went up to Saul, who greeted him, saying, "The LORD  ( יהוה ) bless you, Samuel! I have obeyed the LORD  ( יהוה )'s command." (14) Samuel asked, "Why, then, do I hear cattle mooing and sheep bleating?" (15) Saul answered, "My men took them from the Amalekites. They kept the best sheep and cattle to offer as a sacrifice to the LORD  ( יהוה ) your God, and the rest we have destroyed completely." (16) "Stop," Samuel ordered, "and I will tell you what the LORD  ( יהוה ) said to me last night." "Tell me," Saul said. (17) Samuel answered, "Even though you consider yourself of no importance, you are the leader of the tribes of Israel. The LORD  ( יהוה ) anointed you king of Israel, (18) and he sent you out with orders to destroy those wicked people of Amalek. He told you to fight until you had killed them all. (19) Why, then, did you not obey him? Why did you rush to grab the loot, and so do what displeases the LORD  ( יהוה )?" (20) "I did obey the LORD  ( יהוה )," Saul replied. "I went out as he told me to, brought back King Agag, and killed all the Amalekites. (21) But my men did not kill the best sheep and cattle that they captured; instead, they brought them here to Gilgal to offer as a sacrifice to the LORD  ( יהוה ) your God." (22) Samuel said, "Which does the LORD  ( יהוה ) prefer: obedience or offerings and sacrifices? It is better to obey him than to sacrifice the best sheep to him. (23) Rebellion against him is as bad as witchcraft, and arrogance is as sinful as idolatry. Because you rejected the LORD  ( יהוה )'s command, he has rejected you as king." (24) "Yes, I have sinned," Saul replied. "I disobeyed the LORD  ( יהוה )'s command and your instructions. I was afraid of my men and did what they wanted. (25) But now I beg you, forgive my sin and go back with me, so that I can worship the LORD  ( יהוה )." (26) "I will not go back with you," Samuel answered. "You rejected the LORD  ( יהוה )'s command, and he has rejected you as king of Israel." (27) Then Samuel turned to leave, but Saul caught hold of his cloak, and it tore. (28) Samuel said to him, "The LORD  ( יהוה ) has torn the kingdom of Israel away from you today and given it to someone who is a better man than you. (29) Israel's majestic God does not lie or change his mind. He is not a human being---he does not change his mind." (30) "I have sinned," Saul replied. "But at least show me respect in front of the leaders of my people and all of Israel. Go back with me so that I can worship the LORD  ( יהוה ) your God." (31) So Samuel went back with him, and Saul worshiped the LORD  ( יהוה ). (32) "Bring King Agag here to me," Samuel ordered. Agag came to him, trembling with fear, thinking to himself, "What a bitter thing it is to die!" (33) Samuel said, "As your sword has made many mothers childless, so now your mother will become childless." And he cut Agag to pieces in front of the altar in Gilgal. (34) Then Samuel went to Ramah, and King Saul went home to Gibeah. (35) As long as Samuel lived, he never again saw the king; but he grieved over him. The LORD  ( יהוה ) was sorry that he had made Saul king of Israel.

1 Samuel 15:1-35 LITV And Samuel said to Saul, Jehovah  ( יהוה ) sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel. And now listen to the voice of the words of Jehovah  ( יהוה ) . (2) So says Jehovah  ( יהוה ) of Hosts, I will visit Amalek with what he did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. (3) Now go, and you shall strike Amalek and destroy all that he has. And you shall have no pity on him, and you shall put to death all from man to woman, from little one to suckling, from ox to sheep, from camel to ass. (4) And Saul heard and mustered the people in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand were men of Judah. (5) And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and lay in wait in a torrent-bed. (6) And Saul said to the Kenite, Go! Depart! Go out from the midst of Amalek, lest I destroy you with him. For you acted with kindness toward all the sons of Israel when they came up out of Egypt. And the Kenite departed from the midst of Amalek. (7) And Saul struck Amalek from Havilah, as you go to Shur, which is before Egypt. (8) And he captured Agag the king of Amalek alive. But he exterminated all the people with the mouth of the sword. (9) And Saul and the people had pity on Agag, and on the best of the flock, and of the herd, and the seconds, and the lambs, and all that was good, and were not willing to exterminate them. But they exterminated every despised and worthless thing. (10) And the Word of Jehovah  ( יהוה ) was to Samuel, saying, (11) I repent that I made Saul reign as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and he has not risen to do My Words. And Samuel was angry, and he cried to Jehovah  ( יהוה ) all night. (12) And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning. And it was told to Samuel, saying, Saul has come to Carmel. And behold, he has set up a monument to himself, and has gone around, and has passed over and gone down to Gilgal. (13) And Samuel came to Saul. And Saul said to him, Blessed are you of Jehovah  ( יהוה ) . I have risen to do the Word of Jehovah  ( יהוה ) . (14) And Samuel said, What then is this bleating of the flock in my ears, and the sound of the herd that I hear? (15) And Saul said, They have brought them from Amalek, because the people had pity on the best of the flock, and of the herd, in order to sacrifice to Jehovah  ( יהוה ) your God. And the rest we have exterminated. (16) And Samuel said to Saul, Stop, and I will declare to you that which Jehovah  ( יהוה ) spoke to me tonight. And he said to him, Speak. (17) And Samuel said, Were you not, even you, little in your own eyes before becoming leader of the tribes of Israel? And Jehovah  ( יהוה ) anointed you as king over Israel. (18) And Jehovah  ( יהוה ) sent you on the way, and said, Go, and exterminate the sinners, Amalek; and fight against them until they finish them. (19) Then why did you not listen to the voice of Jehovah  ( יהוה ) ? Yea, you flew on the spoil, and did you not do evil in the eyes of Jehovah  ( יהוה ) . (20) And Saul said to Samuel, I did obey the voice of Jehovah  ( יהוה ) , and I went in the way which Jehovah  ( יהוה ) sent me, and brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I exterminated Amalek. (21) And the people took from the spoil of the flock, and the first of the herd, that devoted, to sacrifice to Jehovah  ( יהוה ) your God in Gilgal. (22) And Samuel said, Does Jehovah  ( יהוה ) delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of Jehovah  ( יהוה ) ? Behold! Obeying is better than sacrifice; to give attention is better than the fat of rams. (23) For the sin of divination is rebellion; insolence is both iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the Word of Jehovah  ( יהוה ) , so He has rejected you from being king. (24) And Saul said to Samuel, I have sinned, for I have transgressed the mouth of Jehovah  ( יהוה ) and your word, because I feared the people, and I listened to their voice. (25) And now please lift up my sin, and return with me that I may worship Jehovah  ( יהוה ) . (26) And Samuel said to Saul, I will not return with you, for you have rejected the Word of Jehovah  ( יהוה ) and Jehovah  ( יהוה ) has rejected you from being king over Israel. (27) And Samuel turned around to go. And he took hold on the skirt of his robe, and it tore. (28) And Samuel said to him, Jehovah  ( יהוה ) has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to your neighbor who is better than you. (29) And also the Glory of Israel will not lie nor repent, for He is not a man that He should repent. (30) And he said, I have sinned. Honor me now, please, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and return with me. And I shall worship Jehovah  ( יהוה ) your God. (31) And Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul worshiped Jehovah  ( יהוה ) . (32) And Samuel said, Bring near to me Agag the king of Amalek. And Agag came to him cheerfully. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death has passed. (33) And Samuel said, As your sword has bereaved women of children, so shall your mother be bereft among women. And Samuel cut Agag in pieces before Jehovah  ( יהוה ) in Gilgal. (34) And Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went to his house, to Gibeah of Saul. (35) And Samuel never again saw Saul until the day of his death, for Samuel mourned for Saul. And Jehovah  ( יהוה ) repented that He had caused Saul to reign over Israel.

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us.
