Exodus 16:1-36 GW The whole community of Israelites moved from Elim and came to the desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai. This was on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had left Egypt. (2) In the desert the whole community complained about Moses and Aaron. (3) The Israelites said to them, "If only the LORD ( יהוה ) had let us die in Egypt! There we sat by our pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted! You brought us out into this desert to let us all starve to death!" (4) The LORD ( יהוה ) said to Moses, "I'm going to send you food from heaven like rain. Each day the people should go out and gather only what they need for that day. In this way I will test them to see whether or not they will follow my instructions. (5) But on the sixth day when they prepare what they bring home, it should be twice as much as they gather on other days." (6) So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, "In the evening you will know that it was the LORD ( יהוה ) who brought you out of Egypt. (7) In the morning you will see the glory of the LORD ( יהוה ) , because he has heard you complaining about him. Why are you complaining about us?" (8) Moses also said, "The LORD ( יהוה ) will give you meat to eat in the evening and all the food you want in the morning. The LORD ( יהוה ) has heard you complaining about him. Who are we? You're not complaining about us but about the LORD ( יהוה ) ." (9) Moses said to Aaron, "Tell the whole community of Israelites, 'Come into the LORD ( יהוה ) 'S presence. He has heard you complaining.'" (10) While Aaron was speaking to the whole community of Israelites, they looked toward the desert. Suddenly, they saw the glory of the LORD ( יהוה ) in the column of smoke. (11) The LORD ( יהוה ) said to Moses, (12) "I've heard the Israelites complaining. Tell them, 'At dusk you will eat meat, and in the morning you will eat all the food you want. Then you will know that I am the LORD ( יהוה ) your God.'" (13) That evening quails came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. (14) When the dew was gone, the ground was covered with a thin layer of flakes like frost on the ground. (15) When the Israelites saw it, they asked each other, "What is this?" because they didn't know what it was. Moses said to them, "It's the food the LORD ( יהוה ) has given you to eat. (16) This is what the LORD ( יהוה ) has commanded: Each of you should gather as much as you can eat. Take two quarts for each person in your tent." (17) So that is what the Israelites did. Some gathered more, some less. (18) They measured it into two-quart containers. Those who had gathered more didn't have too much. Those who had gathered less didn't have too little. They gathered as much as they could eat. (19) Then Moses said to them, "No one may keep any of it until morning." (20) But some of them didn't listen to Moses. They kept part of it until morning, and it was full of worms and smelled bad. So Moses was angry with them. (21) Each morning they gathered as much food as they could eat. When the sun was hot, it melted away. (22) But on the sixth day they gathered twice as much food, four quarts per person. All the leaders of the community came to Moses and told him about it. (23) He said to them, "This is what the LORD ( יהוה ) said: Tomorrow is a day of worship, a holy day of worship dedicated to the LORD ( יהוה ) . Bake what you want to bake, and boil what you want to boil. Save all that's left over, and keep it until tomorrow morning." (24) So they saved it until the next morning as Moses had commanded, but it didn't smell or have worms in it. (25) "Eat it today," Moses said, "because today is a day of worship dedicated to the LORD ( יהוה ) . You won't find anything on the ground today. (26) You can gather food on six days, but on the seventh day, the day of worship, you won't find any." (27) On the seventh day some people went out to gather food, but they didn't find any. (28) The LORD ( יהוה ) said to Moses, "How long will you refuse to do what I have commanded and instructed you to do? (29) Remember: The LORD ( יהוה ) has given you this day of worship. That's why he gives you enough food on the sixth day for two days. On the seventh day you may not leave. Everyone, stay where you are." (30) So the people never worked on the seventh day of the week. (31) The Israelites called the food manna. It was like coriander seeds. It was white and tasted like wafers made with honey. (32) Moses said, "This is what the LORD ( יהוה ) has commanded: Take two quarts of manna to be kept for your descendants. This way they will see the food that I gave you to eat in the desert when I brought you out of Egypt." (33) Moses said to Aaron, "Take a jar, put two quarts of manna in it, and put it in the LORD ( יהוה ) 'S presence to be kept for your descendants." (34) Aaron put the jar of manna in front of the words of God's promise to be kept there, as the LORD ( יהוה ) commanded Moses. (35) The Israelites ate manna for 40 years until they came to a place to settle. They ate manna until they came to the border of Canaan. (36) (Now, the standard dry measure at that time held 20 quarts.)

And all the congregation of the sons of Israel came into the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their going out from the land of Egypt. (2) And all the congregation of the sons of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness. (3) And the sons of Israel said to them, Would that we had died by the hand of Jehovah ( יהוה ) in the land of Egypt, in our sitting by the fleshpots, in our eating bread to satisfaction. For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill all this assembly with hunger. (4) And Jehovah ( יהוה ) said to Moses, Behold, I AM! Bread will rain from the heavens for you. And the people shall go out and gather the matter of a day in its day, so that I may test them, whether they will walk in My Law or not. (5) And it shall be on the sixth day they shall prepare what they bring in. And it shall be double what they gather day by day. (6) And Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, At evening you shall know that Jehovah ( יהוה ) has brought you from the land of Egypt; (7) and in the morning you shall see the glory of Jehovah ( יהוה ) , in His hearing your murmurings against Jehovah ( יהוה ) . And we, what are we that you murmur against us? (8) And Moses said, When Jehovah ( יהוה ) gives you flesh to eat in the evening, and bread in the morning, to satisfaction; when Jehovah ( יהוה ) hears your murmurings which you are murmuring against Him, you will see. And what are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against Jehovah ( יהוה ) . (9) And Moses spoke to Aaron, Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, Come near before Jehovah ( יהוה ) ; for He has heard your murmurings. (10) And it happened, as Aaron was speaking to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, they turned toward the wilderness. And, behold! The glory of Jehovah ( יהוה ) appeared in the cloud! (11) And Jehovah ( יהוה ) spoke to Moses, saying, (12) I have heard the murmurings of the sons of Israel. Speak to them, saying, Between the evenings you shall eat flesh; and in the morning you shall be satisfied with bread; and you shall know that I am Jehovah ( יהוה ) your God. (13) And it happened in the evening: the quail came up and covered the camp. And in the morning a layer of dew was around the camp. (14) And the layer of dew went up, and, behold, something small was on the face of the wilderness, scalelike, small like the hoarfrost on the earth. (15) And the sons of Israel looked. And they said, each one to his brother, What is that? For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, That is the bread which Jehovah ( יהוה ) has given to you for food. (16) This is the thing which Jehovah ( יהוה ) commanded. Gather from it, each one according to the mouth of his eating; an omer for a head. By the number of your souls you shall take for each man who is in your tent. (17) And so the sons of Israel did. And they gathered; the one gathering much and the one gathering little. (18) And they measured with an omer. And the one gathering much did not have too much. And the one gathering little did not have any need. Each one gathered according to the mouth of his eating. (19) And Moses said to them, Do not let anyone leave from it until morning. (20) And they did not listen to Moses. And some left from it until morning; and it became rotten with maggots, and stunk. And Moses was angry against them. (21) And they gathered it in the morning, each one in the morning according to the mouth of his eating. And it melted in the heat of the sun. (22) And it came about on the sixth day, they gathered double bread, two omers for one. And all the leaders of the congregation came and reported to Moses. (23) And he said to them, That is what Jehovah ( יהוה ) said, Tomorrow is a rest, a holy sabbath to Jehovah ( יהוה ) . What you will bake, bake. And boil what you will boil. And lay up for yourselves all that is left over, to keep it until the morning. (24) And they laid it up until the morning, as Moses commanded. And it did not stink and no maggot was in it. (25) And Moses said, Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to Jehovah ( יהוה ) . Today you will not find it in the field. (26) You shall gather it six days, and on the seventh is a sabbath; in it none shall be found. (27) And it happened on the seventh day, some of the people went out to gather, and did not find any. (28) And Jehovah ( יהוה ) said to Moses, Until when do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws? (29) Behold! Because Jehovah ( יהוה ) has given the sabbath to you, therefore He is giving to you two days of bread on the sixth day. Each one of you remain in his place. Do not let anyone go out from his place on the seventh day. (30) And the people rested on the seventh day. (31) And the house of Israel called its name, Manna. And it was like the seed of coriander, white; and its taste like cakes with honey. (32) And Moses said, This is the thing which Jehovah ( יהוה ) has commanded, Fill an omer from it, to keep for your generations, so that they may see the bread which I caused you to eat in the wilderness, as I brought you out from the land of Egypt. (33) And Moses said to Aaron, Take one pitcher, and put there the fullness of an omer of manna, and lay it up before Jehovah ( יהוה ) , to keep for your generations. (34) Even as Jehovah ( יהוה ) commanded Moses, Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to keep it. (35) And the sons of Israel ate the manna forty years, until their coming into an inhabited land. They ate the manna until their coming to the border of the land of Canaan. (36) And the omer was the tenth of an ephah.

(4) Then the LORD ( יהוה ) said to Moses, "Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. (5) On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily." (6) So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, "At evening you shall know that it was the LORD ( יהוה ) who brought you out of the land of Egypt, (7) and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD ( יהוה ) , because he has heard your grumbling against the LORD ( יהוה ) . For what are we, that you grumble against us?" (8) And Moses said, "When the LORD ( יהוה ) gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the LORD ( יהוה ) has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him--what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the LORD ( יהוה ) ." (9) Then Moses said to Aaron, "Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, 'Come near before the LORD ( יהוה ) , for he has heard your grumbling.'" (10) And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD ( יהוה ) appeared in the cloud. (11) And the LORD ( יהוה ) said to Moses, (12) "I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, 'At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the LORD ( יהוה ) your God.'" (13) In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp. (14) And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. (15) When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, "It is the bread that the LORD ( יהוה ) has given you to eat. (16) This is what the LORD ( יהוה ) has commanded: 'Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an omer, according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent.'" (17) And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less. (18) But when they measured it with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat. (19) And Moses said to them, "Let no one leave any of it over till the morning." (20) But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. (21) Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted. (22) On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers each. And when all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, (23) he said to them, "This is what the LORD ( יהוה ) has commanded: 'Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD ( יהוה ) ; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay aside to be kept till the morning.'" (24) So they laid it aside till the morning, as Moses commanded them, and it did not stink, and there were no worms in it. (25) Moses said, "Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the LORD ( יהוה ) ; today you will not find it in the field. (26) Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none." (27) On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. (28) And the LORD ( יהוה ) said to Moses, "How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? (29) See! The LORD ( יהוה ) has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day." (30) So the people rested on the seventh day. (31) Now the house of Israel called its name manna. It was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. (32) Moses said, "This is what the LORD ( יהוה ) has commanded: 'Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.'" (33) And Moses said to Aaron, "Take a jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the LORD ( יהוה ) to be kept throughout your generations." (34) As the LORD ( יהוה ) commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the testimony to be kept. (35) The people of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till they came to the border of the land of Canaan. (36) (An omer is the tenth part of an ephah.)
