Hebrews 11:8-12:3 NWT
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed in going out into a place he was destined to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, although not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he resided as an alien in the land of the promise as in a foreign land, and dwelt in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the very same promise. 10 For he was awaiting the city having real foundations, the builder and maker of which [city] is God. 11 By faith also Sarah herself received power to conceive seed, even when she was past the age limit, since she esteemed him faithful who had promised. 12 Hence also from one [man], and him as good as dead, there were born [children] just as the stars of heaven for multitude and as the sands that are by the seaside, innumerable. 13 In faith all these died, although they did not get the [fulfillment of the] promises, but they saw them afar off and welcomed them and publicly declared that they were strangers and temporary residents in the land. 14 For those who say such things give evidence that they are earnestly seeking a place of their own. 15 And yet, if they had indeed kept remembering that [place] from which they had gone forth, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they are reaching out for a better [place], that is, one belonging to heaven. Hence God is not ashamed of them, to be called upon as their God, for he has made a city ready for them. 17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, as good as offered up Isaac, and the man that had gladly received the promises attempted to offer up [his] only-begotten [son], 18 although it had been said to him: "What will be called 'your seed' will be through Isaac." 19 But he reckoned that God was able to raise him up even from the dead; and from there he did receive him also in an illustrative way. 20 By faith also Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. 21 By faith Jacob, when about to die, blessed each of the sons of Joseph and worshiped leaning upon the top of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, nearing his end, made mention of the exodus of the sons of Israel; and he gave a command concerning his bones. 23 By faith Moses was hid for three months by his parents after his birth, because they saw the young child was beautiful and they did not fear the order of the king. 24 By faith Moses, when grown up, refused to be called the son of the daughter of Pharaoh, 25 choosing to be ill-treated with the people of God rather than to have the temporary enjoyment of sin, 26 because he esteemed the reproach of the Christ as riches greater than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked intently toward the payment of the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, but not fearing the anger of the king, for he continued steadfast as seeing the One who is invisible. 28 By faith he had celebrated the passover and the splashing of the blood, that the destroyer might not touch their firstborn ones. 29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land, but on venturing out upon it the Egyptians were swallowed up. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. 31 By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish with those who acted disobediently, because she received the spies in a peaceable way. 32 And what more shall I say? For the time will fail me if I go on to relate about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David as well as Samuel and the [other] prophets, 33 who through faith defeated kingdoms in conflict, effected righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 stayed the force of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from a weak state were made powerful, became valiant in war, routed the armies of foreigners. 35 Women received their dead by resurrection; but other [men] were tortured because they would not accept release by some ransom, in order that they might attain a better resurrection. 36 Yes, others received their trial by mockings and scourgings, indeed, more than that, by bonds and prisons. 37 They were stoned, they were tried, they were sawn asunder, they died by slaughter with the sword, they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, while they were in want, in tribulation, under ill-treatment; 38 and the world was not worthy of them. They wandered about in deserts and mountains and caves and dens of the earth. 39 And yet all these, although they had witness borne to them through their faith, did not get the [fulfillment of the] promise, 40 as God foresaw something better for us, in order that they might not be made perfect apart from us. 12 So, then, because we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also put off every weight and the sin that easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 as we look intently at the Chief Agent and Perfecter of our faith, Jesus. For the joy that was set before him he endured a torture stake, despising shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Indeed, consider closely the one who has endured such contrary talk by sinners against their own interests, that YOU may not get tired and give out in YOUR souls.

Hebrews 11:8-12:3 ALT
(8) By faith Abraham obeyed, having been called to go out to the place which he was about to be receiving for an inheritance, and he went out not knowing where he [was] going. [see Gen 12:1-7] (9) By faith he lived as a stranger in land of the promise, as a foreigner, having lived in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the joint-heirs of the same promise. [see Gen 12:8; 13:3] (10) For he was looking forward to the city having the foundations, whose architect and builder [is] God. (11) By faith also Sarah herself received power for conception of seed, and she gave birth after [the] [normal] time of life, since she regarded the One having promised [to be] faithful. [see Gen 18:11-14; 21:2] (12) And so from one [man] were born, and in these [things] having been as good as dead, [as many descendents] as the stars of heaven in number and as innumerable as sand which [is] by the sea-shore. [Gen 15:5; 22:17; 32:12] (13) All these died according to faith, not having received the promises, _but_ having seen them from a distance and having welcomed [them], and having confessed that they are strangers and sojourners on the earth. (14) For the ones saying such [things] make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. (15) And if indeed they had been remembering that [land] from which they went out, they might have had an opportunity to return. (16) But now they long for a better, that is, a heavenly [land]. For this reason, God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for He prepared a city for them. (17) By faith Abraham, being tested, had offered up Isaac, the one having received the promises was offering up his uniquely-begotten [son], (18) in regard to whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed will be called [i.e., your descendents will come through Isaac]," [Gen 21:12] (19) having taken into account that God [was] able to raise [him] up even from [the] dead, from where he indeed received [him] back in a figurative sense. [see Gen 22:1-12] (20) By faith concerning coming [things], Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau. (21) By faith Jacob, [when he was] dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, [leaning] on the top of his staff. [Gen 47:31, LXX] (22) By faith Joseph, coming to the end [of his life], made mention of the departure [Gr., exodus] of the sons [and daughters] of Israel and gave orders concerning his bones. [see Gen 50:24,25] (23) By faith Moses, having been born, was hid three months by his parents, because they saw the beautiful, young child and were not afraid of the decree of the king. [see Exod 2:2; 1:16] (24) By faith Moses, having become great, refused to be called a son of [the] daughter of Pharaoh, [see Exod 2:11-15] (25) having chosen rather to be sharing hardship with the people of God than to be having [the] temporary pleasure of sin, (26) having regarded the disgrace of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking away from all else to [fig., concentrating on] the reward. (27) By faith he left Egypt behind, not having been afraid of the rage of the king, for he persevered as seeing the Invisible One. [see Exod 10:28; 12:50-51] (28) By faith he had kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that the one destroying the first-born would not touch them. [see Exod 12:21-28] (29) By faith they passed through the Red Sea as through dry [land], which the Egyptians having taken an attempt were swallowed [fig., drowned]. [see Exod 14:21-29] (30) By faith the walls of Jericho fell, having been encircled for seven days. [see Joshua 6:1-20] (31) By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with the ones having refused to believe, having received the spies with peace. [see Joshua 2:9-21; 6:22,23] (32) And what more shall I say? For the time will run short [for] me [to be] describing fully about Gideon, both Barak and Samson, and Jephthah, both David and Samuel, and the prophets, (33) who through faith conquered kingdoms, brought about righteousness, obtained promises, stopped [the] mouths of lions, (34) extinguished [the] power of fire, escaped [the] mouth [fig., edge] of [the] sword, were made strong from weaknesses [or, infirmities], became mighty in battle, routed foreign armies. (35) Women received [back] their dead [ones] by resurrection. But others were tortured, not accepting [their] release, so that they would obtain a better resurrection. (36) But others received trial of [fig., experienced] public ridicule and beatings with a whip, and in addition, chains and imprisonment. (37) They were stoned; they were sawn in two; they were tested; they were put to death by murder with a sword; they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, being afflicted, being ill-treated (38) (of whom the world was not worthy); wandering about in desolate places and [in] mountains and [in] caves and [in] the holes of the earth. (39) And all these, having received approval through [their] faith, did not receive the promise, (40) God having provided something better concerning us, that they should not be made perfect without us. Hebrews 12:1-3 ALT (1) So therefore, _we_ also having so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, having put off every impediment and the easily entangling sin, let us be running with patient endurance the contest having been set before us, (2) looking with undivided attention to the Originator and Perfecter of [our] faith-Jesus-who, because of the joy being set before Him, endured a cross, having disregarded [the] shame, and has sat down at [the] right hand of the throne of God. (3) For consider carefully the One having endured such hostility by the sinners against Himself, lest you* become weary in your* souls, being discouraged.
