John 1:24-34 CEV Some Pharisees had also been sent to John. (25) They asked him, "Why are you baptizing people, if you are not the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet?" (26) John told them, "I use water to baptize people. But here with you is someone you don't know. (27) Even though I came first, I am not good enough to untie his sandals." [John was born a few months before Jesus.] (28) John said this as he was baptizing east of the Jordan River in Bethany. (29) The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said: Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (30) He is the one I told you about when I said, "Someone else will come. He is greater than I am, because he was alive before I was born." (31) I didn't know who he was. But I came to baptize you with water, so that everyone in Israel would see him. (32) I was there and saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven. And the Spirit stayed on him. (33) Before this I didn't know who he was. But the one who sent me to baptize with water had told me, "You will see the Spirit come down and stay on someone. Then you will know that he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit." (34) I saw this happen, and I tell you that he is the Son of God.

John 1:24-34 GNB The messengers, who had been sent by the Pharisees, (25) then asked John, "If you are not the Messiah nor Elijah nor the Prophet, why do you baptize?" (26) John answered, "I baptize with water, but among you stands the one you do not know. (27) He is coming after me, but I am not good enough even to untie his sandals." [John was born a few months before Jesus.] (28) All this happened in Bethany on the east side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing. (29) The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "There is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (30) This is the one I was talking about when I said, 'A man is coming after me, but he is greater than I am, because he existed before I was born.' (31) I did not know who he would be, but I came baptizing with water in order to make him known to the people of Israel." (32) And John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and stay on him. (33) I still did not know that he was the one, but God, who sent me to baptize with water, had said to me, 'You will see the Spirit come down and stay on a man; he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' (34) I have seen it," said John, "and I tell you that he is the Son of God."

John 1:24-34 GW Some of those who had been sent were Pharisees. (25) They asked John, "Why do you baptize if you're not the Messiah or Elijah or the prophet?" (26) John answered them, "I baptize with water. Someone you don't know is standing among you. (27) He's the one who comes after me. I am not worthy to untie his sandal strap." [John was born a few months before Jesus.] (28) This happened in Bethany on the east side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing. (29) John saw Jesus coming toward him the next day and said, "Look! This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. (30) He is the one I spoke about when I said, 'A man who comes after me was before me because he existed before I did.' (31) I didn't know who he was. However, I came to baptize with water to show him to the people of Israel." (32) John said, "I saw the Spirit come down as a dove from heaven and stay on him. (33) I didn't know who he was. But God, who sent me to baptize with water, had told me, 'When you see the Spirit come down and stay on someone, you'll know that person is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' (34) I have seen this and have declared that this is the Son of God."

John 1:24-34 ESV (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) (25) They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" (26) John answered them, "I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, (27) even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." (28) [John was born a few months before Jesus.] These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. (29) The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (30) This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.' (31) I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel." (32) And John bore witness: "I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. (33) I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' (34) And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God."

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
