John 3:1-21 GNB There was a Jewish leader named Nicodemus, who belonged to the party of the Pharisees. (2) One night he went to Jesus and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher sent by God. No one could perform the miracles you are doing unless God were with him." (3) Jesus answered, "I am telling you the truth: no one can see the Kingdom of God without being born again." (4) "How can a grown man be born again?" Nicodemus asked. "He certainly cannot enter his mother's womb and be born a second time!" (5) "I am telling you the truth," replied Jesus, "that no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. (We are born of water at our physical birth. We are born of spirit by our turning to Christ and ingesting [living on] his teachings. [John 6:53-58] The words of Christ are spirit and life from God.) (6) A person is born physically of human parents, but is born spiritually of the Spirit. [John 6:63] (7) Do not be surprised because I tell you that you must all be born again. (8) The wind blows wherever it wishes; you hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. It is like that with everyone who is born of the Spirit." (9) "How can this be?" asked Nicodemus. (10) Jesus answered, "You are a great teacher in Israel, and you don't know this? (11) I am telling you the truth: we speak of what we know and report what we have seen, yet none of you is willing to accept our message. (12) You do not believe me when I tell you about the things of this world; how will you ever believe me, then, when I tell you about the things of heaven? (13) And no one has ever gone up to heaven except the Son of Man, who came down from heaven." (14) As Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the desert, (Num 21:6-9) in the same way the Son of Man must be lifted up, (15) so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. (16) For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. (17) For God did not send his Son into the world to be its judge, but to be its savior. (18) Those who believe in the Son are not judged; [they are born again by their faith in Christ] but those who do not believe have already been judged, because they have not believed in God's only Son. (19) This is how the judgment works: the light (the teachings of Christ) has come into the world, but people love the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds are evil. (20) Those who do evil things hate the light and will not come to the light, because they do not want their evil deeds to be shown up. (21) But those who do what is true come to the light in order that the light may show that what they did was in obedience to God.

John 3:1-21 CEV There was a man named Nicodemus who was a Pharisee and a Jewish leader. (2) One night he went to Jesus and said, "Sir, we know that God has sent you to teach us. You could not work these miracles, unless God were with you." (3) Jesus replied, "I tell you for certain that you must be born from above before you can see God's kingdom!" (4) Nicodemus asked, "How can a grown man ever be born a second time?" (5) Jesus answered: I tell you for certain that before you can get into God's kingdom, you must be born not only by water, but by the Spirit. (We are born of water at our physical birth. We are born of spirit by our turning to Christ and ingesting [living on] his teachings. [John 6:53-58] The words of Christ are spirit and life from God.) (6) Humans give life to their children. Yet only God's Spirit can change you into a child of God. [John 6:63] (7) Don't be surprised when I say that you must be born from above. (8) Only God's Spirit gives new life. The Spirit is like the wind that blows wherever it wants to. You can hear the wind, but you don't know where it comes from or where it is going. (9) "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked. (10) Jesus replied: How can you be a teacher of Israel and not know these things? (11) I tell you for certain that we know what we are talking about because we have seen it ourselves. But none of you will accept what we say. (12) If you don't believe when I talk to you about things on earth, how can you possibly believe if I talk to you about things in heaven? (13) No one has gone up to heaven except the Son of Man, who came down from there. (14) And the Son of Man must be lifted up, just as that metal snake was lifted up by Moses in the desert. (Num 21:6-9) (15) Then everyone who has faith in the Son of Man will have eternal life. (16) God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die. (17) God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them! (18) No one who has faith in God's Son will be condemned. [they are born again by their faith in Christ] But everyone who doesn't have faith in him has already been condemned for not having faith in God's only Son. (19) The light has come into the world, (the teachings of Christ) and people who do evil things are judged guilty because they love the dark more than the light. (20) People who do evil hate the light and won't come to the light, because it clearly shows what they have done. (21) But everyone who lives by the truth will come to the light, because they want others to know that God is really the one doing what they do.

John 3:1-21 GW Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish council. (2) He came to Jesus one night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that God has sent you as a teacher. No one can perform the miracles you perform unless God is with him." (3) Jesus replied to Nicodemus, "I can guarantee this truth: No one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." (4) Nicodemus asked him, "How can anyone be born when he's an old man? He can't go back inside his mother a second time to be born, can he?" (5) Jesus answered Nicodemus, "I can guarantee this truth: No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. (We are born of water at our physical birth. We are born of spirit by our turning to Christ and ingesting [living on] his teachings. [John 6:53-58] The words of Christ are spirit and life from God.) (6) Flesh and blood give birth to flesh and blood, but the Spirit gives birth to things that are spiritual. [John 6:63] (7) Don't be surprised when I tell you that all of you must be born from above. (8) The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you don't know where the wind comes from or where it's going. That's the way it is with everyone born of the Spirit." (9) Nicodemus replied, "How can that be?" (10) Jesus told Nicodemus, "You're a well-known teacher of Israel. Can't you understand this? (11) I can guarantee this truth: We know what we're talking about, and we confirm what we've seen. Yet, you don't accept our message. (12) If you don't believe me when I tell you about things on earth, how will you believe me when I tell you about things in heaven? (13) No one has gone to heaven except the Son of Man, who came from heaven. (14) "As Moses lifted up the snake on a pole in the desert, (Num 21:6-9) so the Son of Man must be lifted up. (15) Then everyone who believes in him will have eternal life." (16) God loved the world this way: He gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life. (17) God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but to save the world. (18) Those who believe in him won't be condemned. [they are born again by their faith in Christ] But those who don't believe are already condemned because they don't believe in God's only Son. (19) This is why people are condemned: The light (the teachings of Christ) came into the world. Yet, people loved the dark rather than the light because their actions were evil. (20) People who do what is wrong hate the light and don't come to the light. They don't want their actions to be exposed. (21) But people who do what is true come to the light so that the things they do for God may be clearly seen.

John 3:1-21 BBE Now there was among the Pharisees a man named Nicodemus, who was one of the rulers of the Jews. (2) He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we are certain that you have come from God as a teacher, because no man would be able to do these signs which you do if God was not with him. (3) Jesus said to him, Truly, I say to you, Without a new birth no man is able to see the kingdom of God. (4) Nicodemus said to him, How is it possible for a man to be given birth when he is old? Is he able to go into his mother's body a second time and come to birth again? (5) Jesus said in answer, Truly, I say to you, If a man's birth is not from water and from the Spirit, it is not possible for him to go into the kingdom of God. (We are born of water at our physical birth. We are born of spirit by our turning to Christ and ingesting [living on] his teachings. [John 6:53-58] The words of Christ are spirit and life from God.) (6) That which has birth from the flesh is flesh, and that which has birth from the Spirit is spirit. [John 6:63] (7) Do not be surprised that I say to you, It is necessary for you to have a second birth. (8) The wind goes where its pleasure takes it, and the sound of it comes to your ears, but you are unable to say where it comes from and where it goes: so it is with everyone whose birth is from the Spirit. (9) And Nicodemus said to him, How is it possible for these things to be? (10) And Jesus, answering, said, Are you the teacher of Israel and have no knowledge of these things? (11) Truly, I say to you, We say that of which we have knowledge; we give witness of what we have seen; and you do not take our witness to be true. (12) If you have no belief when my words are about the things of earth, how will you have belief if my words are about the things of heaven? (13) And no one has ever gone up to heaven but he who came down from heaven, the Son of man. (14) As the snake was lifted up by Moses in the waste land, (Num 21:6-9) even so it is necessary for the Son of man to be lifted up: (15) So that whoever has faith may have in him eternal life. (16) For God had such love for the world that he gave his only Son, so that whoever has faith in him may not come to destruction but have eternal life. (17) God did not send his Son into the world to be judge of the world; he sent him so that the world might have salvation through him. (18) The man who has faith in him does not come up to be judged; [they are born again by their faith in Christ] but he who has no faith in him has been judged even now, because he has no faith in the name of the only Son of God. (19) And this is the test by which men are judged: the light (the teachings of Christ) has come into the world and men have more love for the dark than for the light, because their acts are evil. (20) The light is hated by everyone whose acts are evil and he does not come to the light for fear that his acts will be seen. (21) But he whose life is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his acts have been done by the help of God.

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
