In Samaria he came to a town named Sychar, which was not far from the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. (6) Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired out by the trip, sat down by the well. It was about noon. (7) A Samaritan woman came to draw some water, and Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink of water." (8) (His disciples had gone into town to buy food.) (9) The woman answered, "You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan---so how can you ask me for a drink?" (Jews will not use the same cups and bowls that Samaritans use.) (10) Jesus answered, "If you only knew what God gives and who it is that is asking you for a drink, you would ask him, and he would give you life-giving water." (11) "Sir," the woman said, "you don't have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where would you get that life-giving water? (12) It was our ancestor Jacob who gave us this well; he and his children and his flocks all drank from it. You don't claim to be greater than Jacob, do you?" (13) Jesus answered, "Those who drink this water will get thirsty again, (14) but those who drink the water that I will give them will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give them will become in them a spring which will provide them with life-giving water and give them eternal life." (15) "Sir," the woman said, "give me that water! Then I will never be thirsty again, nor will I have to come here to draw water." (16) "Go and call your husband," Jesus told her, "and come back." (17) "I don't have a husband," she answered. Jesus replied, "You are right when you say you don't have a husband. (18) You have been married to five men, and the man you live with now is not really your husband. You have told me the truth." (19) "I see you are a prophet, sir," the woman said. (20) "My Samaritan ancestors worshiped God on this mountain, but you Jews say that Jerusalem is the place where we should worship God." (21) Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the time will come when people will not worship the Father either on this mountain or in Jerusalem. (22) You Samaritans do not really know whom you worship; but we Jews know whom we worship, because it is from the Jews that salvation comes. (23) But the time is coming and is already here, when by the power of God's Spirit people will worship the Father as he really is, offering him the true worship that he wants. (24) God is Spirit, and only by the power of his Spirit can people worship him as he really is." (25) The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah will come, and when he comes, he will tell us everything." (26) Jesus answered, "I am he, I who am talking with you."
(27) At that moment Jesus' disciples returned, and they were greatly surprised to find him talking with a woman. But none of them said to her, "What do you want?" or asked him, "Why are you talking with her?" (28) Then the woman left her water jar, went back to the town, and said to the people there, (29) "Come and see the man who told me everything I have ever done. Could he be the Messiah?" (30) So they left the town and went to Jesus.
(The unnamed "woman at the well" said she knew the promised Messiah would tell her everything. Hearing and heeding the words of Christ is thus drinking in the waters of life he offered the woman at the well. It is also taking in God's spirit [John 6:63] and is eating the bread from heaven. [John 6:33 of 28-40] Listening to Christ is drinking his blood and eating his flesh. [John 6:52-58] Those are just different expressions to help us understand our "absolute need" to hear God's command to listen to his son. [Mat 7:15] Simple, right? [2 Kings 5:1‑14])

5 Accordingly he came to a city of Sa·mar´i·a called Sy´char near the field that Jacob gave to Joseph his son. 6 In fact, Jacob’s fountain was there. Now Jesus, tired out from the journey, was sitting at the fountain just as he was. The hour was about the sixth.
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her: "Give me a drink." 8 (For his disciples had gone off into the city to buy foodstuffs.) 9 Therefore the Samaritan woman said to him: "How is it that you, despite being a Jew, ask me for a drink, when I am a Samaritan woman?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 In answer Jesus said to her: "If you had known the free gift of God and who it is that says to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." 11 She said to him: "Sir, you have not even a bucket for drawing water, and the well is deep. From what source, therefore, do you have this living water? 12 You are not greater than our forefather Jacob, who gave us the well and who himself together with his sons and his cattle drank out of it, are you?" 13 In answer Jesus said to her: "Everyone drinking from this water will get thirsty again. 14 Whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty at all, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water bubbling up to impart everlasting life." 15 The woman said to him: "Sir, give me this water, so that I may neither thirst nor keep coming over to this place to draw water." 16 He said to her: "Go, call your husband and come to this place." 17 In answer the woman said: "I do not have a husband." Jesus said to her: "You said well, 'A husband I do not have.' 18 For you have had five husbands, and the [man] you now have is not your husband. This you have said truthfully." 19 The woman said to him: "Sir, I perceive you are a prophet. 20 Our forefathers worshiped in this mountain; but you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where persons ought to worship." 21 Jesus said to her: "Believe me, woman, The hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you people worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation originates with the Jews. 23 Nevertheless, the hour is coming, and it is now, when the true worshipers will worship the Father with spirit and truth, for, indeed, the Father is looking for suchlike ones to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit, and those worshiping him must worship with spirit and truth." 25 The woman said to him: "I know that Messiah is coming, who is called Christ. Whenever that one arrives, he will declare all things to us openly." 26 Jesus said to her: "I who am speaking to you am he." 27 Now at this point his disciples arrived, and they began to wonder because he was speaking with a woman. Of course, no one said: “What are you looking for?” or, “Why do you talk with her?” 28 The woman, therefore, left her water jar and went off into the city and told the men: 29 “Come here, see a man that told me all the things I did. This is not perhaps the Christ, is it?” 30 They went out of the city and began coming to him.

and on his way he came to the town of Sychar. It was near the field that Jacob had long ago given to his son Joseph.
(6) The well that Jacob had dug was still there, and Jesus sat down beside it because he was tired from traveling. It was noon, and after Jesus's disciples had gone into town to buy some food, a Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well. Jesus asked her, "Would you please give me a drink of water?"

(9) "You are a Jew," she replied, "and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink of water when Jews and Samaritans won't have anything to do with each other?"
(10) Jesus answered, "You don't know what God wants to give you, and you don't know who is asking you for a drink. If you did, you would ask me for the water that gives life."
(11) "Sir," the woman said, "you don't even have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where are you going to get this life-giving water?
(12) Our ancestor Jacob dug this well for us, and his family and animals got water from it. Are you greater than Jacob?"
(13) Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again.
(14) But no one who drinks the water I give will ever be thirsty again. The water I give is like a flowing fountain that gives eternal life."
(15) The woman replied, "Sir, please give me a drink of that water! Then I won't get thirsty and have to come to this well again."
(16) Jesus told her, "Go and bring your husband."
(17) The woman answered, "I don't have a husband." "That's right," Jesus replied, "you're telling the truth. You don't have a husband. You have already been married five times, and the man you are now living with isn't your husband."

(19) The woman said, "Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.
(20) My ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say Jerusalem is the only place to worship."
(21) Jesus said to her: Believe me, the time is coming when you won't worship the Father either on this mountain or in Jerusalem.
(22) You Samaritans don't really know the one you worship. But we Jews do know the God we worship, and by using us, God will save the world.
(23) But a time is coming, and it is already here! Even now the true worshipers are being led by the Spirit to worship the Father according to the truth. These are the ones the Father is seeking to worship him.
(24) God is Spirit, and those who worship God must be led by the Spirit to worship him according to the truth.
(25) The woman said, "I know that the Messiah will come. He is the one we call Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."
(26) "I am that one," Jesus told her, "and I am speaking to you now."
(27) The disciples returned about this time and were surprised to find Jesus talking with a woman. But none of them asked him what he wanted or why he was talking with her. (28) The woman left her water jar and ran back into town. She said to the people, (29) "Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! Could he be the Messiah?" (30) Everyone in town went out to see Jesus.

Then He comes to a city of Samaria, being called Sychar, near the place which Jacob gave to Joseph his son. (6) Now a well of Jacob was there. So Jesus, having grown weary from the journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour [i.e. 12:00 noon Jewish time or 6:00 p.m. Roman time].
(7) A woman comes from Samaria to draw water. Jesus says to her, "Give Me to drink."
(8) (for His disciples had gone away into the city, so that they should buy food.)
(9) So the Samaritan woman says to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask to drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?" (for Jews do not associate with Samaritans).
(10) Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the free gift of God and who is the One saying to you, 'Give Me to drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."
(11) The woman says to Him, "Lord, You do not even have a vessel to draw with, and the well is deep; from where then do You have this living water?
(12) "_You_ are not greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well, and [he] himself drank out of it, and his sons and his cattle, are You?"
(13) Jesus answered and said to her, "Every [one] drinking of this water will thirst again.
(14) "But whoever drinks of the water which _I_ will give to him will by no means thirst into the age [fig., ever thirst again]! _But_ the water which I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life!"
(15) The woman says to Him, "Lord, give this water to me so that I shall not be thirsting nor coming to this place to be drawing."
(16) Jesus says to her, "Be going, call your husband and come to this place."
(17) The woman answered and said, "I do not have a husband." Jesus says to her, "Correctly you said, 'I do not have a husband.'
(18) "For five husbands you had, and [the one] whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly."
(19) The woman says to him, "Lord, I perceive that _You_ are a prophet.
(20) "Our fathers prostrated themselves in worship in this mountain, and _you*_ say, 'In Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary to be prostrating in worship.'"
(21) Jesus says to her, "Woman, be believing Me, that an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you* prostrate yourselves in worship before the Father.
(22) "_You*_ prostrate yourselves in worship before what you* do not know; we prostrate ourselves in worship before what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.
(23) "_But_ an hour is coming and now is when the true worshipers will prostrate themselves in worship before the Father in spirit and truth, for indeed the Father is seeking such to be prostrating themselves in worship before Him.
(24) "God [is] Spirit [or, [is] as to His essence Spirit], and it is necessary [for] the ones prostrating themselves in worship before Him to be prostrating in worship in spirit and truth."
(25) The woman says to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming, the one being called Christ, when that One comes He will tell us all things."
(26) Jesus says to her, "_I_ am, the One speaking to you."
(27) And upon this [or, at this [point]] His disciples came, and they were marveling that He was speaking with a woman, although no one said, "What are You seeking?" or "Why are You speaking with her?" (28) Then the woman left her water-jug and went away into the city. And she says to the people, (29) "Come! See a Man who told me all [things]—as many as I did. This is not the Christ, is it?" (30) They went out from the city and were coming towards Him.
