John 5:31-44 CEV If I speak for myself, there is no way to prove I am telling the truth. (32) But there is someone else who speaks for me, (Mat 3:17; Mark 9:7; John 12:30; 1 John 5:9) and I know what he says is true. (33) You sent messengers to John, and he told them the truth. (34) I don't depend on what people say about me, but I tell you these things so that you may be saved. (35) John was a lamp that gave a lot of light, and you were glad to enjoy his light for a while. (36) But something more important than John speaks for me. I mean the things that the Father has given me to do! All of these speak for me and prove that the Father sent me. (37) The Father who sent me also speaks for me, but you have never heard his voice or seen him face to face. (38) You have not believed his message, because you refused to have faith in the one he sent. (39) You search the Scriptures, because you think you will find eternal life in them. The Scriptures tell about me, (40) but you refuse to come to me for eternal life. (41) I don't care about human praise, (42) but I do know that none of you love God. (43) I have come with my Father's authority, and you have not welcomed me. But you will welcome people who come on their own. (44) How could you possibly believe? You like to have your friends praise you, and you don't care about praise that the only God can give!
John 5:31-44 GW "If I testify on my own behalf, what I say isn't true. (32) Someone else testifies on my behalf, (Mat 3:17; Mark 9:7; John 12:30; 1 John 5:9) and I know that what he says about me is true. (33) You sent people to John the Baptizer, and he testified to the truth. (34) But I don't depend on human testimony. I'm telling you this to save you. (35) John was a lamp that gave off brilliant light. For a time you enjoyed the pleasure of his light. (36) But I have something that testifies more favorably on my behalf than John's testimony. The tasks that the Father gave me to carry out, these tasks which I perform, testify on my behalf. They prove that the Father has sent me. (37) The Father who sent me testifies on my behalf. You have never heard his voice, and you have never seen his form. (38) So you don't have the Father's message within you, because you don't believe in the person he has sent. (39) You study the Scriptures in detail because you think you have the source of eternal life in them. These Scriptures testify on my behalf. (40) Yet, you don't want to come to me to get eternal life. (41) "I don't accept praise from humans. (42) But I know what kind of people you are. You don't have any love for God. (43) I have come with the authority my Father has given me, but you don't accept me. If someone else comes with his own authority, you will accept him. (44) How can you believe when you accept each other's praise and don't look for the praise that comes from the only God?
John 5:31-44 GNB "If I testify on my own behalf, what I say is not to be accepted as real proof. (32) But there is someone else who testifies on my behalf, (Mat 3:17; Mark 9:7; John 12:30; 1 John 5:9) and I know that what he says about me is true. (33) John is the one to whom you sent your messengers, and he spoke on behalf of the truth. (34) It is not that I must have a human witness; I say this only in order that you may be saved. (35) John was like a lamp, burning and shining, and you were willing for a while to enjoy his light. (36) But I have a witness on my behalf which is even greater than the witness that John gave: what I do, that is, the deeds my Father gave me to do, these speak on my behalf and show that the Father has sent me. (37) And the Father, who sent me, also testifies on my behalf. You have never heard his voice or seen his face, (38) and you do not keep his message in your hearts, for you do not believe in the one whom he sent. (39) You study the Scriptures, because you think that in them you will find eternal life. And these very Scriptures speak about me! (40) Yet you are not willing to come to me in order to have life. (41) "I am not looking for human praise. (42) But I know what kind of people you are, and I know that you have no love for God in your hearts. (43) I have come with my Father's authority, but you have not received me; when, however, someone comes with his own authority, you will receive him. (44) You like to receive praise from one another, but you do not try to win praise from the one who alone is God; how, then, can you believe me?

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
