John 6:35-69 CEV
(35) Jesus replied: I am the bread that gives life! No one who comes to me will ever be hungry. No one who has faith in me will ever be thirsty. (36) I have told you already that you have seen me and still do not have faith in me. (37) Everything and everyone that the Father has given me will come to me, and I won't turn any of them away. (38) I didn't come from heaven to do what I want! I came to do what the Father wants me to do. He sent me, (39) and he wants to make certain that none of the ones he has given me will be lost. Instead, he wants me to raise them to life on the last day. (40) My Father wants everyone who sees the Son to have faith in him and to have eternal life. Then I will raise them to life on the last day. (41) The people started grumbling because Jesus had said he was the bread that had come down from heaven. (42) They were asking each other, "Isn't he Jesus, the son of Joseph? Don't we know his father and mother? How can he say that he has come down from heaven?" (43) Jesus told them: Stop grumbling! (44) No one can come to me, unless the Father who sent me makes them want to come. But if they do come, I will raise them to life on the last day. (45) One of the prophets wrote, "God will teach all of them." And so everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him will come to me. (46) The only one who has seen the Father is the one who has come from him. No one else has ever seen the Father. (47) I tell you for certain that everyone who has faith in me has eternal life. (48) I am the bread that gives life! (49) Your ancestors ate manna in the desert, and later they died. (50) But the bread from heaven has come down, so that no one who eats it will ever die. (51) I am that bread from heaven! Everyone who eats it will live forever. My flesh is the life-giving bread that I give to the people of this world. (52) They started arguing with each other and asked, "How can he give us his flesh to eat?" (53) Jesus answered: I tell you for certain that you won't live unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man. (54) But if you do eat my flesh and drink my blood, you will have eternal life, and I will raise you to life on the last day. (55) My flesh is the true food, and my blood is the true drink. (56) If you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you are one with me, and I am one with you. (57) The living Father sent me, and I have life because of him. Now everyone who eats my flesh will live because of me. (58) The bread that comes down from heaven isn't like what your ancestors ate. They died, but whoever eats this bread will live forever. (59) Jesus was teaching in a Jewish place of worship in Capernaum when he said these things. (60) Many of Jesus's disciples heard him and said, "This is too hard for anyone to understand." (61) Jesus knew that his disciples were grumbling. So he asked, "Does this bother you? (62) What if you should see the Son of Man go up to heaven where he came from? (63) The Spirit is the one who gives life! Human strength can do nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are from that life-giving Spirit. (64) But some of you refuse to have faith in me." Jesus said this, because from the beginning he knew who would have faith in him. He also knew which one would betray him. (65) Then Jesus said, "You cannot come to me, unless the Father makes you want to come. That is why I have told these things to all of you." (66) Because of what Jesus said, many of his disciples turned their backs on him and stopped following him. (67) Jesus then asked his twelve disciples if they were going to leave him. (68) Simon Peter answered, "Lord, there is no one else that we can go to! Your words give eternal life. (69) We have faith in you, and we are sure that you are God's Holy One."

(36) "_But_ I said to you* that you* have both seen Me and you* do not believe. (37) "All that the Father gives to Me will come to Me, and the one coming to Me I shall by no means cast out. (38) "Because I have come down out of heaven, not so that I shall be doing My will, _but_ the will of the One having sent Me. (39) "And this is the will of the Father having sent Me, that out of all which He has given to Me I will not lose [any of] it, _but_ I will raise it up the last day. (40) "And this is the will of the One having sent me, that every [one] looking on the Son and believing [or, trusting] in Him shall be having eternal life, and _I_ will raise him up on the last day." (41) Therefore, the Jews were grumbling about Him, because He said, "_I_ am the bread having come down out of heaven." (42) And they said, "Is this not Jesus, the Son of Joseph, whose father and mother _we_ know? How then says this One, "I have come down out of heaven?" (43) So Jesus answered and said to them, "Stop grumbling with one another. (44) "No one is able to come to Me unless the Father having sent Me draws [or, drags] him, and _I_ will raise him up in the last day. (45) "It has been written in the prophets, 'And they will all be taught of God.' Therefore, every [one] hearing from the Father and having learned comes to Me. [Isaiah 54:13] (46) "Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One being from God, He has seen the Father. (47) "Most positively, I say to you*, the one believing in Me has eternal life. (48) "_I_ am the bread of life! (49) "Your* fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. (50) "This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that anyone shall eat from it and shall not die. (51) "_I_ am the living bread, the One having come down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live into the age [fig., forever], and indeed the bread which _I_ will give is My flesh, which I will give on behalf of the life of the world." (52) Therefore, the Jews began disputing with one another, saying, "How is this One able to give to us His flesh to eat?" (53) So Jesus said to them, "Most positively, I say to you*, unless you* eat the flesh of the Son of Humanity and drink His blood, you* do not have life in yourselves. (54) "The one eating My flesh and drinking My blood has eternal life, and _I_ will raise him up the last day. (55) "For My flesh truly is food, and My blood truly is drink. (56) "The one eating My flesh and drinking My blood remains in Me, and I in him. (57) "Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, also the one feeding on Me, that one will also live because of Me. (58) "This is the bread having come down out of heaven, not as your* fathers ate the manna and died. The one eating this bread will live into the age [fig., forever]!" (59) These things He said in a synagogue, teaching in Capernaum. (60) Therefore, many having heard from His disciples, said, "This word is harsh. Who is able to be hearing it?" (61) But Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples are grumbling about this, said to them, "Does this cause you* to stumble [fig, offend you*]? (62) "Then [what] if you* shall be watching the Son of Humanity ascending where He was before? (63) "The Spirit is the One giving life; the flesh does not accomplish [or, benefit] anything. The words which _I_ have spoken to you* are spirit and are life! (64) "_But_ there are some of you* who do not believe." For Jesus knew from [the] beginning who they are, the ones not believing, and who is the one [who] will be betraying Him. (65) And He said, "For this reason I have said to you*, 'No one is able to come to Me unless it has been given to him from My Father.'" (66) From this [time] many went away of His disciples to the things behind and were no more walking about with Him. (67) So Jesus said to the twelve, "_You*_ do not also want to be going away, do you*?" (68) Then Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom will we go? You have [the] words of eternal life." (69) "And we have come to believe and have come to know that _You_ are the Christ, the Son of the living God!"

He that comes to me will not get hungry at all, and he that exercises faith in me will never get thirsty at all. 36 But I have said to you, you have even seen me and yet do not believe. 37 Everything the Father gives me will come to me, and the one that comes to me I will by no means drive away; 38 because I have come down from heaven to do, not my will, but the will of him that sent me. 39 This is the will of him that sent me, that I should lose nothing out of all that he has given me but that I should resurrect it at the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone that beholds the Son and exercises faith in him should have everlasting life, and I will resurrect him at the last day." 41 Therefore the Jews began to murmur at him because he said: "I am the bread that came down from heaven"; 42 and they began saying: "Is this not Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it that now he says, 'I have come down from heaven'?" 43 In answer Jesus said to them: "Stop murmuring among yourselves. 44 No man can come to me unless the Father, who sent me, draws him; and I will resurrect him in the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, 'And they will all be taught by Jehovah.' Everyone that has heard from the Father and has learned comes to me. 46 Not that any man has seen the Father, except he who is from God; this one has seen the Father. 47 Most truly I say to you, He that believes has everlasting life. 48 "I am the bread of life. 49 your forefathers ate the manna in the wilderness and yet died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread he will live forever; and, for a fact, the bread that I shall give is my flesh in behalf of the life of the world." 52 Therefore the Jews began contending with one another, saying: "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53 Accordingly Jesus said to them: "Most truly I say to you, Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 He that feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has everlasting life, and I shall resurrect him at the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 He that feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood remains in union with me, and I in union with him. 57 Just as the living Father sent me forth and I live because of the Father, he also that feeds on me, even that one will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. It is not as when your forefathers ate and yet died. He that feeds on this bread will live forever." 59 These things he said as he was teaching in public assembly at Capernaum. 60 Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said: "This speech is shocking; who can listen to it?" 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them: "Does this stumble you? 62 What, therefore, if you should behold the Son of man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the spirit that is life-giving; the flesh is of no use at all. The sayings that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64 But there are some of you that do not believe." For from [the] beginning Jesus knew who were the ones not believing and who was the one that would betray him. 65 So he went on to say: "This is why I have said to you, No one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father." 66 Owing to this many of his disciples went off to the things behind and would no longer walk with him. 67 Therefore Jesus said to the twelve: "you do not want to go also, do you?" 68 Simon Peter answered him: "Lord, whom shall we go away to? You have sayings of everlasting life; 69 and we have believed and come to know that you are the Holy One of God."
