John 6:57-63 BBE As the living Father has sent me, and I have life because of the Father, even so he who takes me for his food (eats my flesh) will have life because of me. (58) This is the bread which has come down from heaven. It is not like the food which your fathers had: they took of the manna, and are dead; but he who takes this bread for food will have life for ever. (59) Jesus said these things in the Synagogue while he was teaching at Capernaum. (60) Then, hearing this, a number of his disciples said, This is a hard saying; who is able to take in such teaching? (61) When Jesus became conscious that his disciples were protesting about what he said, he said to them, Does this give you trouble? (62) What then will you say if you see the Son of man going up to where he was before? (63) The spirit is the life giver; the flesh is of no value: the words which I have said to you are spirit and they are life.

Note: Because of so many scriptures similar to John 6:63b above, teaching Jesus's words are spirit and are life, I always direct people to read the words of Christ for themselves... I almost never quote secular religious publications. Breaking that pattern, I here quote from a 50 year old religious magazine the writer of which seems to have been a sincere Bible student, one who understood the same need I now recognize and feel: We all need to perceive the importance of listening to Jesus Christ and to him alone: (Mat 24:11; Mark 13:21-23)

"Once we have the pattern of healthful words, it is vital that we hold onto it. Otherwise, like with some of those Christians in the first century, our faith may be subverted. Men like Hymenaeus and Philetus (2 Tim 2:14-19) may come along and present ideas in a different pattern. Their ideas may sound reasonable, but do not really fit into the overall picture. Therefore, unless we have the true pattern well in mind, we may be led astray. How vital, then, to study carefully the healthful words spoken by Jesus Christ! Get the pattern of his teachings clearly in mind, and hold tightly to it! Never forget God’s counsel:" “My son, to my words do pay attention. To my sayings incline your ear. May they not get away from your eyes. Keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those finding them and health to all their flesh.”—Prov. 4:20-22.

(63) It is the Spirit that gives life. The flesh does not profit, nothing! The Words which I speak to you are spirit and are life.

(61) But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, "Do you take offense at this? (62) Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? (63) It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

It is not like the bread your ancestors ate. They eventually died. Those who eat this bread will live forever." (59) Jesus said this while he was teaching in a synagogue in Capernaum. (60) When many of Jesus' disciples heard him, they said, "What he says is hard to accept. Who wants to listen to him anymore?" (61) Jesus was aware that his disciples were criticizing his message. So Jesus asked them, "Did what I say make you lose faith? (62) What if you see the Son of Man go where he was before? (63) Life is spiritual. Your physical existence doesn't contribute to that life. The words that I have spoken to you are spiritual. They are life.

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us.
