There is much debate among the sects who claim Christianity as to what Jesus here meant by the term "little flock." Recognize the establishing of doctrine to be a distinguishing mark of
religion, identifying and separating it from Christianity.
[Mat 7:15-20] Instead of simply reading the Gospels to learn from Christ,
[Mat 17:5] making sure his words are their only doctrine, all Religionists want to pick one scripture
(or a few) and then argue their doctrine based on other people agreeing with their special understanding of that subset of the Bible.
[John 5:39-40] Disagreeing with them, in their judgment, means disapproval by God. At least one cult has built their entire faith and form of worship about their "special" understanding of that "little flock" term. Just before calling his followers a little flock, however, in
verses 29 and 30, Jesus told them to stop seeking the things all the rest of Satan's world [
1 John 5:18-21] are seeking. It should not surprise anyone Jesus would then call those who chose to follow him out of that mass of lost humanity, a little flock. There is danger for you in believing someone's assertion your faith must be tied to accepting their understanding of some deeper meaning attached to this (or any) particular scripture, or in supporting their understanding of the Bible as a whole. Simply listen to the words of Christ, in context, and then put faith in what you understand he actually taught; faith in what he said to you. He is the only one God sent to teach you. If you sincerely listen to him, and exercise faith in your personal understanding of Jesus's words, you will be safe. [
John 31-32] If people who follow the doctrines of men are able to be approved by God, they will be safe too. But, will they receive approval by listening to other men? [
Mat 15:8-9;
Mat 7:21-23] You need not ever concern yourself with their sectarian teachings [
Mat 7:15] or with what judgment it brings them. [
John 12:48] Follow Christ, understanding he and his teachings to be the kingdom given us by his Father! [
Mat 3:2;
Mat 4:23] The words of Christ and all those helping spread faith in him make up the kingdom of heaven. [
Mat 13:33;
Mat 12:30] And then, having built faith in what you know Jesus taught: Do not fear, little flock...
