Matthew 2:1-20 ALT . . .Now Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judea in [the] days of Herod the king, look!, learned astrologers [or, Magi, and in verses 7,16] from [the] east arrived in Jerusalem, (2) saying, "Where is the One having been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star at the rising [of the sun] [fig., in the east], and we came to prostrate ourselves in reverence before Him." (3) But Herod the king having heard, was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. (4) And having gathered together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he began inquiring from them where the Christ [or, the Messiah, and throughout book] would be born. (5) So they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet, (6) 'And you, Bethlehem, [in the] land of Judah, you are by no means least among the leaders of Judah, for out of you will come forth a Ruling [One], who will shepherd [or, rule] My people Israel.'" [Micah 5:2] (7) Then Herod, having called the learned astrologers privately, found out from them the exact time of the appearing [of the] star. (8) And having sent them to Bethlehem, he said, "Go and search carefully for the young Child, but whenever you find [Him], report back to me, in order that I also, having come, shall prostrate myself in reverence before Him." (9) So having heard the king, they departed. And look! The star which they saw at the rising [of the sun] [fig., in the east] was going before them, until, having come, it stood over where the young Child was. (10) And having seen the star, they rejoiced exceedingly [with] great joy. (11) Then having come to the house, they found the young Child with Mary His mother, and having fallen down, they prostrate themselves in reverence before Him, and having opened their treasure boxes, they presented to Him gifts: gold and frankincense and myrrh [i.e., expensive incense and ointment, respectively]. (12) And having been divinely warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own region by another way. (13) Now when they had departed, look!, an angel of [the] Lord () appears in a dream to Joseph, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother and be fleeing to Egypt, and be there until I speak to you, for Herod is about to be seeking the young Child to destroy Him." (14) And having risen, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed to Egypt, (15) and he was there until the death of Herod, so that the [word] spoken by the Lord () through the prophet should be fulfilled, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son." [Hosea 11:1] (16) Then Herod, having seen that he was deceived by the learned astrologers, became extremely enraged; and having sent out [soldiers], he executed all the male children, the [ones] in Bethlehem and in all its borders, from two years old and under, according to the exact time that he found out from the learned astrologers. (17) Then was fulfilled the [word] spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, (18) "A voice in Ramah was heard, lamentation and weeping and much mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, (Rachel and her sister Leah were the mothers of Jacob's children [the nation of Israel]. Rachel was buried in our near Bethlehem, so it is fitting she would be used to represent those grieving Jewish mothers.) and she was not wanting to be comforted because they are not." [Jer 31:15] (19) Now Herod having come to the end [of his life], look!, an angel of [the] Lord () appears in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, (20) saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and be going to the land of Israel, for the ones seeking the life of the young Child have died."
Matthew 2:1-20 GNB . . .Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea, during the time when Herod was king. Soon afterward, some men who studied the stars came from the East to Jerusalem (2) and asked, "Where is the baby born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star when it came up in the east, and we have come to worship him." (3) When King Herod heard about this, he was very upset, and so was everyone else in Jerusalem. (4) He called together all the chief priests and the teachers of the Law and asked them, "Where will the Messiah be born?" (5) "In the town of Bethlehem in Judea," they answered. "For this is what the prophet wrote: (6) 'Bethlehem in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least of the leading cities of Judah; for from you will come a leader who will guide my people Israel.' " [Micah 5:2] (7) So Herod called the visitors from the East to a secret meeting and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. (8) Then he sent them to Bethlehem with these instructions: "Go and make a careful search for the child; and when you find him, let me know, so that I too may go and worship him." (9) And so they left, and on their way they saw the same star they had seen in the East. When they saw it, how happy they were, what joy was theirs! It went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. (10) (SEE 2:9) (11) They went into the house, and when they saw the child with his mother Mary, they knelt down and worshiped him. They brought out their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and presented them to him. (12) Then they returned to their country by another road, since God had warned them in a dream not to go back to Herod. (13) After they had left, an angel of the Lord () appeared in a dream to Joseph and said, "Herod will be looking for the child in order to kill him. So get up, take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you to leave." (14) Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and left during the night for Egypt, (15) where he stayed until Herod died. This was done to make come true what the Lord () had said through the prophet, "I called my Son out of Egypt." [Hosea 11:1] (16) When Herod realized that the visitors from the East had tricked him, he was furious. He gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its neighborhood who were two years old and younger---this was done in accordance with what he had learned from the visitors about the time when the star had appeared. (17) In this way what the prophet Jeremiah had said came true: (18) "A sound is heard in Ramah, the sound of bitter weeping. Rachel is crying for her children; she refuses to be comforted, for they are dead." [Jer 31:15] (19) After Herod died, an angel of the Lord () appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt (20) and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and go back to the land of Israel, because those who tried to kill the child are dead."
Matthew 2:1-20 Darby . . .Now Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, behold magi from the east arrived at Jerusalem, saying, (2) Where is the king of the Jews that has been born? for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to do him homage. (3) But Herod the king having heard of it , was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; (4) and, assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born. (5) And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea; for thus it is written through the prophet: (6) And *thou* Bethlehem, land of Juda, art in no wise the least among the governors of Juda; for out of thee shall go forth a leader who shall shepherd my people Israel. [Micah 5:2] (7) Then Herod, having secretly called the magi, inquired of them accurately the time of the star that was appearing; (8) and having sent them to Bethlehem, said, Go, search out accurately concerning the child, and when ye shall have found him bring me back word, so that *I* also may come and do him homage.
(9) And they having heard the king went their way; and lo, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them until it came and stood over the place where the little child was. (10) And when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. (11) And having come into the house they saw the little child with Mary his mother, and falling down did him homage. And having opened their treasures, they offered to him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. (12) And being divinely instructed in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
(13) Now, they having departed, behold, an angel of the Lord () appears in a dream to Joseph, saying, Arise, take to thee the little child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there until I shall tell thee; for Herod will seek the little child to destroy it. (14) And, having arisen, he took to him the little child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt. (15) And he was there until the death of Herod, that that might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord () through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. [Hosea 11:1]
(16) Then Herod, seeing that he had been mocked by the magi, was greatly enraged; and sent and slew all the boys which were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years and under, according to the time which he had accurately inquired from the magi. (17) Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet, saying, (18) A voice has been heard in Rama, weeping, and great lamentation: Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
[Jer 31:15] (19) But Herod having died, behold, an angel of the Lord () appears in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, (20) Arise, take to thee the little child and its mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they who sought the life of the little child are dead.
Matthew 2:1-20 NWT . . .After Jesus had been born in Beth´le·hem of Ju·de´a in the days of Herod the king, look! astrologers from eastern parts came to Jerusalem, 2 saying: “Where is the one born king of the Jews? For we saw his star [when we were] in the east, and we have come to do him obeisance.” 3 At hearing this King Herod was agitated, and all Jerusalem along with him; 4 and on gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people he began to inquire of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They said to him: “In Beth´le·hem of Ju·de´a; for this is how it has been written through the prophet, 6 ‘And you, O Beth´le·hem of the land of Judah, are by no means the most insignificant [city] among the governors of Judah; for out of you will come forth a governing one, who will shepherd my people, Israel.’” [Micah 5:2] 7 Then Herod secretly summoned the astrologers and carefully ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearing; 8 and, when sending them to Beth´le·hem, he said: “Go make a careful search for the young child, and when YOU have found it report back to me, that I too may go and do it obeisance.” 9 When they had heard the king, they went their way; and, look! the star they had seen [when they were] in the east went ahead of them, until it came to a stop above where the young child was. 10 On seeing the star they rejoiced very much indeed. 11 And when they went into the house they saw the young child with Mary its mother, and, falling down, they did obeisance to it. They also opened their treasures and presented it with gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 However, because they were given divine warning in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew to their country by another way. 13 After they had withdrawn, look! Jehovah's () angel appeared in a dream to Joseph, saying: “Get up, take the young child and its mother and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I give you word; for Herod is about to search for the young child to destroy it.” 14 So he got up and took along the young child and its mother by night and withdrew into Egypt, 15 and he stayed there until the decease of Herod, for that to be fulfilled which was spoken by Jehovah () through his prophet, saying: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” [Hosea 11:1] 16 Then Herod, seeing he had been outwitted by the astrologers, fell into a great rage, and he sent out and had all the boys in Beth´le·hem and in all its districts done away with, from two years of age and under, according to the time that he had carefully ascertained from the astrologers. 17 Then that was fulfilled which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying: 18 “A voice was heard in Ra´mah, weeping and much wailing; it was Rachel weeping for her children, and she was unwilling to take comfort, because they are no more.” [Jer 31:15] 19 When Herod had deceased, look! Jehovah's () angel appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said: “Get up, take the young child and its mother and be on your way into the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the soul of the young child are dead.”
