Study of the Bible should be viewed as a long term project. A hobby that can, and actually should, become all consuming and can provide more joy than can be imagined.

In an advertisement by Allstate Insurance, they state that a sixteen year old has crash rates 3 times higher than a seventeen year old, and 5 times higher than an eighteen year old. Why such a difference with so little age difference? Because their brain is not fully developed. There is a part of the brain called the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex that is not fully developed until a person is in their twenties. That portion of the brain relates to decision making, problem solving, and notably to understanding future consequences of today's actions. How much longer might it take to fully train our mind to understand such things?

The Bible is the greatest tool for training one in understanding such things. (Psalms 119:97-112) You should not imagine you can read the Bible once and understand it all. Men spend their whole lives reading it and still learn more every time they do. It is God's wisdom and it helps us to make our mind over using our power of reason. (Romans 12:1-2) The insurance company noted young ones can be helped through this brain development period with proper training and supervision programs. That is what the Bible does for us with our spiritual development. By studying the Bible we gain the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16)

We should not expect this transformation to happen overnight. Do your best to immerse yourself in God's word. Read it often enough to get comfortable with it. This can be supported by listening to it. Get the Bible in recorded format and listen to it. It is available in MP3 format so it can be listened to in those tiny MP3 music players. God is the one teaching you to benefit yourself, and the more you can learn about his word the more benefit to you. (Isaiah 48:17)
