We have all heard people and even preachers say: "You should worship next Sunday with the church of your choice." These Bible verses illustrate why choosing a church can be a really bad idea. You should personally come to know   יהוה   as the God of the Bible and as the only true God. You should also know Jesus Christ as   יהוה 's son. You should always offer your prayers and your worship to   יהוה   as an indivdual, accompanied with your faith in his son. It is a bad time (and always has been) to be found praying to any God other than   יהוה  , or worshipping as part of a group, some of whom might not even know the true God.

1 Kings 18:25-40 MWT (with God's name restored) Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it." (26) And they took the bull that he gave them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, "O Baal, answer us!" But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made. (27) And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, "Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is in deep reflection, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened." (28) And they cried even louder and cut themselves after their custom with knives and lances, until the blood flowed out upon them. (29) And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention. (30) Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me." And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the   יהוה   that had been thrown down. (31) Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the   יהוה   came, saying, "Israel shall be your name," (32) and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the   יהוה  . And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs of seed. (33) And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, "Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood." (34) And he said, "Do it a second time." And they did it a second time. And he said, "Do it a third time." And they did it a third time. (35) And the water ran around the altar and filled the trench also with water. (36) And at the time of the offering of the sacrifice, Elijah the prophet came near and said, "O   יהוה  , God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. (37) Answer me, O   יהוה  , answer me, that this people may know that you, O   יהוה  , are God, and that you have turned their hearts back." (38) Then the fire of the   יהוה   fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. (39) And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, "  יהוה  , he is God;   יהוה  , he is God." (40) And Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape." And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there.

1 Kings 18:25-40 GW Elijah told the prophets of Baal, "Choose one bull for yourselves. Prepare yours first, because there are more of you. Call on the name of your god, but don't set the wood on fire." (26) They took the bull he gave them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon. They said, "Baal, answer us!" But there wasn't a sound or an answer. So they danced around the altar they had made. (27) At noon Elijah started to make fun of them. "Shout louder, since he is a god. Maybe he's thinking, relieving himself, or traveling! Maybe he's sleeping, and you have to wake him!" (28) So they shouted louder. They also cut themselves with swords and spears until their blood flowed. (This is what their ritual called for.) (29) In the afternoon they continued to rant and rave until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no sound, no answer, no attention given to them. (30) Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come over here." So all the people came to him. He rebuilt the LORD'S  (  יהוה  )   altar that had been torn down. (31) Elijah took 12 stones, one for each of the tribes named after Jacob's sons. (The LORD  (  יהוה  )   had spoken his word to Jacob: "Your name will be Israel.") (32) Elijah built an altar in the LORD'S  (  יהוה  )   name with those stones. He also made a trench that could hold 12 quarts of grain around the altar. (33) He arranged the wood, cut up the bull, and put it on the wood. (34) He said, "Fill four jars with water. Pour the water on the offering and on the wood." Then he said, "Do it again," and they did it again. Then he said, "Do it a third time," and they did it a third time. (35) The water flowed around the altar, and even the trench was filled with water. (36) When it was time to offer the sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward. He said, " LORD  (  יהוה  )   God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make known today that you are God in Israel and that I'm your servant and have done all these things by your instructions. (37) Answer me, LORD  (  יהוה  )   ! Answer me! Then these people will know that you, LORD  (  יהוה  )   , are God and that you are winning back their hearts." (38) So a fire from the LORD  (  יהוה  )   fell down and consumed the burnt offering, wood, stones, and dirt. The fire even dried up the water that was in the trench. (39) All the people saw it and immediately bowed down to the ground. "The LORD  (  יהוה  )   is God!" they said. "The LORD  (  יהוה  )   is God!" (40) Elijah told them, "Seize the prophets of Baal. Don't let any of them escape." The people seized them, and Elijah took them to the Kishon River and slaughtered them there.

1 Kings 18:25-40 LITV And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose the one bull for yourself, and prepare first, for you are many; and you call on the name of your god, but place no fire. (26) And they took the bull that was given to them, and prepared, and called on the name of Baal from the morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, answer us! And there was no sound, and no one was answering; and they leaped about the altar that one had made. (27) And it happened at noon, that Elijah taunted them and said, Call with a loud voice, for he is a god; for he is meditating, or pursuing, or on a journey; it may be he is asleep and must be awakened. (28) And they called with a loud voice, and cut themselves, according to their way, with swords and with spears until blood gushed out on them. (29) And it happened as noon passed by, that they prophesied madly until the offering up of the offering; and no sound came, and no one was answering, and no one was paying attention. (30) And Elijah said to all the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him; and he healed the altar of Jehovah  (  יהוה  )   that had been broken down. (31) And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the Word of Jehovah  (  יהוה  )   came, saying, Israel shall be your name. (32) And he built an altar with the stones in the name of Jehovah  (  יהוה  )   , and made a trench around the altar large as two seahs of seed in space. (33) And he arranged the wood, and cut the bull in pieces, and placed it on the wood, and said, Fill four water jars of water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood. (34) And he said, Do it a second time; and they did it a second time; and he said, Do it a third time; and they did it a third time. (35) And the water went around the altar, and also he filled the trench with water. (36) And it happened at the offering of the sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, O Jehovah  (  יהוה  )   , the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known today that You are God in Israel, and I am Your servant, that by Your Word I have done all these things. (37) Answer me, O Jehovah  (  יהוה  )   , answer me; and this people shall know that You are Jehovah  (  יהוה  )   God; and You shall turn their hearts back again. (38) And fire fell from Jehovah  (  יהוה  )   and burned up the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and the water in the trench was licked up. (39) And all the people saw, and fell on their faces, and said, Jehovah  (  יהוה  )   , He is the God; Jehovah  (  יהוה  )   , He is the God! (40) And Elijah said to them, Seize the prophets of Baal; do not let a man of them escape. And they caught them, and Elijah brought them down to the Kishon and killed them there.

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
