Exodus 12:1-51 GNB The LORD ( יהוה ) spoke to Moses and Aaron in Egypt: (2) "This month is to be the first month of the year for you. (3) Give these instructions to the whole community of Israel: On the tenth day of this month each man must choose either a lamb or a young goat for his household. (4) If his family is too small to eat a whole animal, he and his next-door neighbor may share an animal, in proportion to the number of people and the amount that each person can eat. (5) You may choose either a sheep or a goat, but it must be a one-year-old male without any defects. (6) Then, on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, the whole community of Israel will kill the animals. (7) The people are to take some of the blood and put it on the doorposts and above the doors of the houses in which the animals are to be eaten. (8) That night the meat is to be roasted, and eaten with bitter herbs and with bread made without yeast. (9) Do not eat any of it raw or boiled, but eat it roasted whole, including the head, the legs, and the internal organs. (10) You must not leave any of it until morning; if any is left over, it must be burned. (11) You are to eat it quickly, for you are to be dressed for travel, with your sandals on your feet and your walking stick in your hand. It is the Passover Festival to honor me, the LORD ( יהוה ) . (12) "On that night I will go through the land of Egypt, killing every first-born male, both human and animal, and punishing all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD ( יהוה ) . (13) The blood on the doorposts will be a sign to mark the houses in which you live. When I see the blood, I will pass over you and will not harm you when I punish the Egyptians. (14) You must celebrate this day as a religious festival to remind you of what I, the LORD ( יהוה ) , have done. Celebrate it for all time to come." (15) The LORD ( יהוה ) said, "For seven days you must not eat any bread made with yeast---eat only unleavened bread. On the first day you are to get rid of all the yeast in your houses, for if anyone during those seven days eats bread made with yeast, he shall no longer be considered one of my people. (16) On the first day and again on the seventh day you are to meet for worship. No work is to be done on those days, but you may prepare food. (17) Keep this festival, because it was on this day that I brought your tribes out of Egypt. For all time to come you must celebrate this day as a festival. (18) From the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month to the evening of the twenty-first day, you must not eat any bread made with yeast. (19) For seven days no yeast must be found in your houses, for if anyone, native-born or foreign, eats bread made with yeast, he shall no longer be considered one of my people." (20) (SEE 12:19) (21) Moses called for all the leaders of Israel and said to them, "Each of you is to choose a lamb or a young goat and kill it, so that your families can celebrate Passover. (22) Take a sprig of hyssop, dip it in the bowl containing the animal's blood, and wipe the blood on the doorposts and the beam above the door of your house. Not one of you is to leave the house until morning. (23) When the LORD ( יהוה ) goes through Egypt to kill the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the beams and the doorposts and will not let the Angel of Death enter your houses and kill you. (24) You and your children must obey these rules forever. (25) When you enter the land that the LORD ( יהוה ) has promised to give you, you must perform this ritual. (26) When your children ask you, 'What does this ritual mean?' (27) you will answer, 'It is the sacrifice of Passover to honor the LORD ( יהוה ) , because he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt. He killed the Egyptians, but spared us.' " The Israelites knelt down and worshiped. (28) Then they went and did what the LORD ( יהוה ) had commanded Moses and Aaron. (29) At midnight the LORD ( יהוה ) killed all the first-born sons in Egypt, from the king's son, who was heir to the throne, to the son of the prisoner in the dungeon; all the first-born of the animals were also killed. (30) That night, the king, his officials, and all the other Egyptians were awakened. There was loud crying throughout Egypt, because there was not one home in which there was not a dead son. (31) That same night the king sent for Moses and Aaron and said, "Get out, you and your Israelites! Leave my country; go and worship the LORD ( יהוה ) , as you asked. (32) Take your sheep, goats, and cattle, and leave. Also pray for a blessing on me." (33) The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country; they said, "We will all be dead if you don't leave." (34) So the people filled their baking pans with unleavened dough, wrapped them in clothing, and carried them on their shoulders. (35) The Israelites had done as Moses had said, and had asked the Egyptians for gold and silver jewelry and for clothes. (36) The LORD ( יהוה ) made the Egyptians respect the people and give them what they asked for. In this way the Israelites carried away the wealth of the Egyptians. (37) The Israelites set out on foot from Rameses for Sukkoth. There were about 600,000 men, not counting women and children. (38) A large number of other people and many sheep, goats, and cattle also went with them. (39) They baked unleavened bread from the dough that they had brought out of Egypt, for they had been driven out of Egypt so suddenly that they did not have time to get their food ready or to prepare leavened dough. (40) The Israelites had lived in Egypt for 430 years. (41) On the day the 430 years ended, all the tribes of the LORD ( יהוה ) 's people left Egypt. (42) It was a night when the LORD ( יהוה ) kept watch to bring them out of Egypt; this same night is dedicated to the LORD ( יהוה ) for all time to come as a night when the Israelites must keep watch. (43) The LORD ( יהוה ) said to Moses and Aaron, "These are the Passover regulations: No foreigner shall eat the Passover meal, (44) but any slave that you have bought may eat it if you circumcise him first. (45) No temporary resident or hired worker may eat it. (46) The whole meal must be eaten in the house in which it was prepared; it must not be taken outside. And do not break any of the animal's bones. (47) The whole community of Israel must celebrate this festival, (48) but no uncircumcised man may eat it. If a foreigner has settled among you and wants to celebrate Passover to honor the LORD ( יהוה ) , you must first circumcise all the males of his household. He is then to be treated like a native-born Israelite and may join in the festival. (49) The same regulations apply to native-born Israelites and to foreigners who settle among you." (50) All the Israelites obeyed and did what the LORD ( יהוה ) had commanded Moses and Aaron. (51) On that day the LORD ( יהוה ) brought the Israelite tribes out of Egypt.

It shall be the first of the months of the year for you. (3) Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, On the tenth of this month, they shall each take for themselves an animal of the flock for a father's house, a flock animal for a house. (4) And if the house is too small for a flock animal, he and his neighbor next to his house shall take according to the number of souls, each one according to the mouth of his eating, you shall count concerning the flock animal. (5) A flock animal, a male without blemish, a yearling, shall be to you. You shall take from the sheep or from the goats. (6) And it shall be for you to keep until the fourteenth day of this month. And all the assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it between the evenings. (7) And they shall take from the blood, and put it on the two side doorposts and on the upper doorpost, on the houses in which they eat it. (8) And they shall eat the flesh in this night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. (9) Do not eat it raw, or at all boiled in water, but roasted with fire; its head with its legs and with its inward parts. (10) And you shall not leave any of it until morning. And you shall burn with fire that left from it until morning. (11) And you shall eat it this way: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Passover to Jehovah ( יהוה ) . (12) And I will pass through in the land of Egypt in this night. And I will strike every first-born in the land of Egypt, from man even to livestock. And I will execute judgments on all the gods of Egypt. I am Jehovah ( יהוה ) ! (13) And the blood shall be a sign to you, on the houses where you are. And I will see the blood, and I will pass over you. And the plague shall not be on you to destroy, when I strike in the land of Egypt. (14) And the day shall be a memorial for you. And you shall celebrate it as a feast to Jehovah ( יהוה ) , for your generations. You shall celebrate it as a law forever. (15) You shall eat unleavened bread seven days. Indeed, on the first day you shall cause leaven to cease from your houses. For anyone eating any leaven, that soul shall be cut off from Israel, from the first day until the seventh day. (16) And on the first day shall be a holy gathering, and in the seventh day a holy gathering shall be to you. Not any work may be done on them. Only what must be eaten by your soul, that alone may be done by you. (17) And you shall observe the unleavened bread for on this very day I brought out your armies from the land of Egypt. And you shall observe this day for your generations, a statute forever. (18) In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month, at evening. (19) For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses. For anyone eating any leaven, that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, among the aliens, and among the natives of the land. (20) You shall not eat leaven, none. You shall eat unleavened bread in all your dwellings. (21) And Moses called to all the elders of Israel and said to them, Draw out and take of the flock for you and for your families, and kill the passover. (22) And take a bunch of hyssop and dip in the blood in the basin. And touch some of the blood in the basin to the lintel and on the two doorposts. And you shall not go out, anyone from the door of his house until morning. (23) And Jehovah ( יהוה ) will pass through to strike Egypt. And He will see the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, and Jehovah ( יהוה ) will pass over the door. And He will not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you. (24) And you shall observe this Word for an ordinance for you, and for your sons forever. (25) And it shall be, when you come into the land which Jehovah ( יהוה ) shall give to you, as He has spoken, you shall observe this service. (26) And it shall be, when your sons say to you, What is this service to you? (27) Then you shall say, A sacrifice of a passover of Jehovah ( יהוה ) , who passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He struck Egypt. And He delivered our houses. And the people bowed and worshiped. (28) And the sons of Israel went out and did as Jehovah ( יהוה ) commanded Moses and Aaron. So they did. (29) And it happened at midnight. Jehovah ( יהוה ) struck every first-born in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of Pharaoh, the one sitting on the throne, to the first-born of the captive who was in the prison house, and every first-born of animals. (30) And Pharaoh arose by night, he and all his servants, and all the Egyptians. And there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not a one who had died. (31) And he called Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Arise, go out from the midst of my people, both you and the sons of Israel. And go serve Jehovah ( יהוה ) according to your word. (32) Take both your flocks and your herds, as you said, and go. And bless me also. (33) And the Egyptians were strong on the people, to hasten to send them away from the land. For they said, All of us are about to die. (34) And the people took up their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothing on their shoulders. (35) And the sons of Israel did according to the word of Moses. And they asked from the Egyptians articles of silver and articles of gold, and clothing. (36) And Jehovah ( יהוה ) gave favor to the people in the eyes of the Egyptians. And they granted their requests. And they plundered Egypt. (37) And the sons of Israel traveled from Rameses to Succoth, the men being about six hundred thousand on foot, apart from little ones. (38) And also a mixed multitude went up with them, and flocks, and herds, very many livestock. (39) And they baked the dough which they brought out from Egypt into unleavened cakes. For it was not leavened, because they were driven out from Egypt, and they were not able to delay. And also they had not prepared food for a journey for themselves. (40) And the time of the dwelling of the sons of Israel, which they dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. (41) And it happened, from the end of four hundred and thirty years, it happened on this day, all the armies of Jehovah ( יהוה ) went out from the land of Egypt. (42) It is a night of celebration to Jehovah ( יהוה ) , for bringing them out from the land of Egypt. This night is a celebration for all the sons of Israel to their generations. (43) And Jehovah ( יהוה ) said to Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the Passover. No stranger may eat of it. (44) And every man's slave, a purchase of silver, you shall circumcise him, then he may eat of it. (45) A foreigner and a hired servant may not eat of it. (46) It shall be eaten in one house. You shall not carry any of the flesh outside from the house. And you shall not break a bone in it. (47) All the congregation of Israel shall prepare it. (48) And when a visitor shall stay with you, and will do the Passover to Jehovah ( יהוה ) , let every male to him be circumcised, and then he may come near to prepare it. And he shall be like a native of the land. But any uncircumcised one may not eat of it. (49) One law shall be to the native, and to the visitor, the one staying in your midst. (50) And all the sons of Israel did as Jehovah ( יהוה ) commanded Moses and Aaron; so they did. (51) And it happened on this day, Jehovah ( יהוה ) brought out the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt by their armies.

(4) A household may be too small to eat a whole animal. That household and the one next door can share one animal. Choose your animal based on the number of people and what each person can eat. (5) Your animal must be a one-year-old male that has no defects. You may choose a lamb or a young goat. (6) Take care of it until the fourteenth day of this month. "Then at dusk, all the assembled people from the community of Israel must slaughter their animals. (7) They must take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they will eat the animals. (8) The meat must be eaten that same night. It must be roasted over a fire and eaten with bitter herbs and unleavened bread. (9) Don't eat any of it raw or boiled but roast the whole animal over a fire. (10) Don't leave any of it until morning. Anything left over in the morning must be burned up. (11) This is how you should be dressed when you eat it: with your belt on, your sandals on your feet, and your shepherd's staff in your hand. You must eat it in a hurry. It is the LORD ( יהוה ) 'S Passover. (12) "On that same night I will go throughout Egypt and kill every firstborn male, both human and animal. I will severely punish all the gods of Egypt, because I am the LORD ( יהוה ) . (13) But the blood on your houses will be a sign for your protection. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. Nothing will touch or destroy you when I strike Egypt. (14) "This day will be one for you to remember. This is a permanent law for generations to come: You will celebrate this day as a pilgrimage festival in the LORD ( יהוה ) 'S honor. (15) For seven days you must eat unleavened bread. On the very first day you must remove any yeast that you have in your houses. Whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh day must be excluded from Israel. (16) You must have a holy assembly on the first day and another one on the seventh. You must not work on these days except to prepare your own meals. That's all you may do. (17) You must celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread because it was on this very day that I brought you out of Egypt in organized family groups. This is a permanent law for future generations: You must celebrate this day. (18) From the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month until the evening of the twenty-first day you must eat unleavened bread. (19) There should be no yeast in your houses for seven days. Whoever eats anything with yeast in it must be excluded from the community of Israel, whether he is an Israelite or not. (20) Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live, you must eat only unleavened bread." (21) Then Moses called for all the leaders of Israel. He said to them, "Pick out a lamb or a young goat for your families, and kill the Passover animal. (22) Take the branch of a hyssop plant, dip it in the blood which is in a bowl, and put some of the blood on the top and sides of the doorframes of your houses. No one may leave the house until morning. (23) The LORD ( יהוה ) will go throughout Egypt to kill the Egyptians. When he sees the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe, he will pass over that doorway, and he will not let the destroyer come into your home to kill you. (24) "You must follow these instructions. They are a permanent law for you and your children. (25) When you enter the land that the LORD ( יהוה ) will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. (26) When your children ask you what this ceremony means to you, (27) you must answer, 'It's the Passover sacrifice in the LORD ( יהוה ) 'S honor. The LORD ( יהוה ) passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he killed the Egyptians.'" Then the people knelt, bowing with their faces touching the ground. (28) The Israelites did as the LORD ( יהוה ) had commanded Moses and Aaron. (29) At midnight the LORD ( יהוה ) killed every firstborn male in Egypt from the firstborn son of Pharaoh who ruled the land to the firstborn son of the prisoner in jail, and also every firstborn animal. (30) Pharaoh, all his officials, and all the other Egyptians got up during the night. There was loud crying throughout Egypt because in every house someone had died. (31) Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron during the night. He said, "You and the Israelites must leave my people at once. Go, worship the LORD ( יהוה ) as you asked. (32) Take your flocks and herds, too, as you asked. Just go! And bless me, too!" (33) The Egyptians begged the people to leave the country quickly. They said, "Soon we'll all be dead!" (34) So the people picked up their bread dough before it had risen and carried it on their shoulders in bowls, wrapped up in their clothes. (35) The Israelites did what Moses had told them and asked the Egyptians for gold and silver jewelry and for clothes. (36) The LORD ( יהוה ) made the Egyptians generous to the people, and they gave them what they asked for. So the Israelites stripped Egypt of its wealth. (37) The Israelites left Rameses to go to Succoth. There were about six hundred thousand men on foot, plus all the women and children. (38) Many other people also went with them, along with large numbers of sheep, goats, and cattle. (39) With the dough they had brought from Egypt, they baked round, flat bread. The dough hadn't risen because they'd been thrown out of Egypt and had no time to prepare food for the trip. (40) The Israelites had been living in Egypt for 430 years. (41) After exactly 430 years all the LORD ( יהוה ) 'S people left Egypt in organized family groups. (42) That night the LORD ( יהוה ) kept watch to take them out of Egypt. (All Israelites in future generations must keep watch on this night, since it is dedicated to the LORD ( יהוה ) .) (43) The LORD ( יהוה ) said to Moses and Aaron, "These are the rules for the Passover: "No foreigner may eat the Passover meal. (44) "Any male slave you have bought may eat it after you have circumcised him. (45) "No foreigner visiting you may eat it. "No hired worker may eat it. (46) "The meal must be eaten inside one house. Never take any of the meat outside the house. "Never break any of the bones. (47) "The whole community of Israel must celebrate the Passover. (48) "Foreigners may want to celebrate the LORD ( יהוה ) 'S Passover. First, every male in the household must be circumcised. Then they may celebrate the Passover like native-born Israelites. But no uncircumcised males may ever eat the Passover meal. (49) The same instructions apply to native-born Israelites as well as foreigners." (50) All the Israelites did as the LORD ( יהוה ) had commanded Moses and Aaron. (51) That very day the LORD ( יהוה ) brought all the Israelites out of Egypt in organized family groups.
