John 16:1-33 ESV
"I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. (2) They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. (3) And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. (4) But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. (5) But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' (6) But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. (7) Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. (8) And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: (9) concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; (10) concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; (11) concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. (12) "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. (13) When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. (14) He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. (15) All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. (16) "A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me." (17) So some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and, 'because I am going to the Father'?" (18) So they were saying, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We do not know what he is talking about." (19) Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me'? (20) Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. (21) When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. (22) So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. (23) In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. (24) Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. (25) "I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. (26) In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; (27) for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. (28) I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father." (29) His disciples said, "Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! (30) Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God." (31) Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? (32) Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. (33) I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."

John 16:1-33 BBE
(1) I have said these things to you so that you may not be in doubt. (2) They will put you out of the Synagogues: yes, the time is coming when whoever puts you to death will have the belief that he is doing God's pleasure. (3) They will do these things to you because they have not had knowledge of the Father or of me. (4) I have said these things to you so that when the time comes, what I have said may come to your mind. I did not say them to you at the first, because then I was still with you. (5) But now I am going to him who sent me; and not one of you says to me, Where are you going? (6) But your hearts are full of sorrow because I have said these things. (7) But what I am saying is true: my going is for your good: for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. (8) And he, when he comes, will make the world conscious of sin, and of righteousness, and of being judged: (9) Of sin, because they have not faith in me; (10) Of righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no more; (11) Of being judged, because the ruler of this world has been judged. (12) I have still much to say to you, but you are not strong enough for it now. (13) However, when he, the Spirit of true knowledge, has come, he will be your guide into all true knowledge: for his words will not come from himself, but whatever has come to his hearing, that he will say: and he will make clear to you the things to come. (14) He will give me glory, because he will take of what is mine, and make it clear to you. (15) Everything which the Father has is mine: that is why I say, He will take of what is mine and will make it clear to you. (16) After a little time you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me. (17) So some of the disciples said one to another, What is this he is saying, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me? and, I am going to the Father? (18) So they said again and again, What is this he is saying, A little time? His words are not clear to us. (19) Jesus saw that they had a desire to put the question to him, so he said to them, Is this what you are questioning one with another, why I said, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me? (20) Truly I say to you, You will be weeping and sorrowing, but the world will be glad: you will be sad, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. (21) When a woman is about to give birth she has sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she has given birth to the child, the pain is put out of her mind by the joy that a man has come into the world. (22) So you have sorrow now: but I will see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and no one will take away your joy. (23) And on that day you will put no questions to me. Truly I say to you, Whatever request you make to the Father, he will give it to you in my name. (24) Up to now you have made no request in my name: do so, and it will be answered, so that your hearts may be full of joy. (25) All this I have said to you in veiled language: but the time is coming when I will no longer say things in veiled language but will give you knowledge of the Father clearly. (26) In that day you will make requests in my name: and I do not say that I will make prayer to the Father for you, (27) For the Father himself gives his love to you, because you have given your love to me and have had faith that I came from God. (28) I came out from the Father and have come into the world: again, I go away from the world and go to the Father. (29) His disciples said, Now you are talking clearly and not in veiled language. (30) Now we are certain that you have knowledge of all things and have no need for anyone to put questions to you: through this we have faith that you came from God. (31) Jesus made answer, Have you faith now? (32) See, a time is coming, yes, it is now here, when you will go away in all directions, every man to his house, and I will be by myself: but I am not by myself, because the Father is with me. (33) I have said all these things to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble: but take heart! I have overcome the world.

John 16:1-33 ALT
(1) "These things I have spoken to you*, so that you* shall not be caused to stumble [fig., be offended]. (2) "They will make you* be expelled from the synagogue, _but_ an hour is coming that every [one] having killed you* shall think [he is] offering sacred service to God. (3) "And these things they will do because they did not know the Father nor Me. (4) "_But_ these things I have spoken to you* so that when the hour comes, you* shall be remembering them, that _I_ said to you*. But these things I did not say to you* from the beginning, because I was with you*. (5) "But now I am going away to the One having sent Me, and none of you* asks Me, 'Where are You going?' (6) "_But_ because these things I have said to you*, sorrow has filled your heart. (7) "_But_ _I_ speak the truth to you*. It is advantageous for you* that _I_ go away. For if _I_ do not go away, the Counselor [or, Helper] will not come to you*, but if I go, I will send Him to you*. (8) "And having come, that One will convict the world concerning sin and concerning righteousness and concerning judgment: (9) concerning sin indeed because they do not believe [or, trust] in Me, (10) and concerning righteousness because I am going away to My Father, and you* no longer look upon Me, (11) and concerning judgment because the ruler of this world has been judged. (12) "I still have many things to be saying to you*, _but_ you* are not able to be bearing [them] now. (13) "But when that One shall come-the Spirit of the truth-He will guide you* into all the truth. For He will not speak from Himself, _but_ as many things as He hears He will speak, and He will announce to you* the coming [things]. (14) "That One will glorify Me, because He will take from [what is] Mine and will announce [it] to you*. (15) "All [things], as many as the Father has, are Mine, for this reason I said, 'He takes from [what is] Mine and will announce [it] to you*.' (16) "A little while and you* are not looking upon Me, and again, a little while and you* will see Me, because I am going away to the Father." (17) Therefore, [some] of His disciples said to one another, "What is this which He says to us, 'A little while, and you* are not looking upon Me, and again, a little while and you* will see Me,' and 'Because _I_ am going away to the Father?'" (18) Then they said, "What is this which He says, 'The little while?' We do not know what He is saying." (19) So Jesus knew that they were desiring to be asking Him. And He said to them, "Concerning this you* inquire one with another, because I said, 'A little while, and you* are not looking upon Me, and again, a little while and you* will see Me?' (20) "Most positively, I say to you*, that you* will weep and _you*_ will lament, but the world will rejoice. You* will be sorrowful, _but_ your* sorrow will become [fig., will turn] into joy. (21) "The woman, whenever she shall be giving birth, has sorrow, because her hour came. But when she gives birth to the young child, no longer does she remember the anguish, on account of the joy that a person was born into the world. (22) "So also you* now indeed have sorrow. But I will see you* again, and your* heart will rejoice, and your* joy no one takes from you*. (23) "And in that day you* will not ask Me anything. Most positively, I say to you*, that as many [things] as you* ask the Father in My name, He will give to you*. (24) "Until now you* asked nothing in My name. Be asking and you* will receive, so that your* joy shall be filled. (25) "These things in figures of speech I have spoken to you*; _but_ an hour is coming when no longer in figures of speech will I speak to you*, _but_ I will tell you* plainly about the Father. (26) "In that day, you* will request for yourselves in My name. And I do not say to you* that _I_ will ask the Father on behalf of you*. (27) "For the Father Himself affectionately loves you*, because you* have affectionately loved Me, and you* have believed [or, have accepted as true] that _I_ came forth from God. (28) "I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again I am leaving the world and am going to the Father." (29) His disciples say to Him, "Listen! Now You are speaking plainly, and You are not even speaking one figure of speech. (30) "Now we know that You know all, and we do not have need that anyone should be questioning You. By this we believe [or, are convinced] that You came forth from God." (31) Jesus answered them, "Now are you* believing [or, convinced]? (32) "Listen! An hour is coming, and now has come, that you* shall be scattered, each to his own, and you* shall leave Me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. (33) "These things I have spoken to you*, so that in Me you* shall be having peace [or, freedom from anxiety]. In the world you* have tribulation, _but_ be taking courage, _I_ have overcome the world!"

John 16:1-33 CEV
(1) I am telling you this to keep you from being afraid. (2) You will be chased out of the Jewish meeting places. And the time will come when people will kill you and think they are doing God a favor. (3) They will do these things because they don't know either the Father or me. (4) I am saying this to you now, so that when the time comes, you will remember what I have said. I was with you at the first, and so I didn't tell you these things. (5) But now I am going back to the Father who sent me, and none of you asks me where I am going. (6) You are very sad from hearing all of this. (7) But I tell you that I am going to do what is best for you. That is why I am going away. The Holy Spirit cannot come to help you until I leave. But after I am gone, I will send the Spirit to you. (8) The Spirit will come and show the people of this world the truth about sin and God's justice and the judgment. (9) The Spirit will show them that they are wrong about sin, because they didn't have faith in me. (10) They are wrong about God's justice, because I am going to the Father, and you won't see me again. (11) And they are wrong about the judgment, because God has already judged the ruler of this world. (12) I have much more to say to you, but right now it would be more than you could understand. (13) The Spirit shows what is true and will come and guide you into the full truth. The Spirit doesn't speak on his own. He will tell you only what he has heard from me, and he will let you know what is going to happen. (14) The Spirit will bring glory to me by taking my message and telling it to you. (15) Everything that the Father has is mine. That is why I have said that the Spirit takes my message and tells it to you. (16) Jesus told his disciples, "For a little while you won't see me, but after a while you will see me. " (17) They said to each other, "What does Jesus mean by saying that for a little while we won't see him, but after a while we will see him? What does he mean by saying that he is going to the Father? (18) What is this 'little while' that he is talking about? We don't know what he means." (19) Jesus knew that they had some questions, so he said: You are wondering what I meant when I said that for a little while you won't see me, but after a while you will see me. (20) I tell you for certain that you will cry and be sad, but the world will be happy. You will be sad, but later you will be happy. (21) When a woman is about to give birth, she is in great pain. But after it is all over, she forgets the pain and is happy, because she has brought a child into the world. (22) You are now very sad. But later I will see you, and you will be so happy that no one will be able to change the way you feel. (23) When that time comes, you won't have to ask me about anything. I tell you for certain that the Father will give you whatever you ask for in my name. (24) You have not asked for anything in this way before, but now you must ask in my name. Then it will be given to you, so that you will be completely happy. (25) I have used examples to explain to you what I have been talking about. But the time will come when I will speak to you plainly about the Father and will no longer use examples like these. (26) You will ask the Father in my name, and I won't have to ask him for you. (27) God the Father loves you because you love me, and you believe that I have come from him. (28) I came from the Father into the world, but I am leaving the world and returning to the Father. (29) The disciples said, "Now you are speaking plainly to us! You are not using examples. (30) At last we know that you understand everything, and we don't have any more questions. Now we believe that you truly have come from God." (31) Jesus replied: Do you really believe me? (32) The time will come and is already here when all of you will be scattered. Each of you will go back home and leave me by myself. But the Father will be with me, and I won't be alone. (33) I have told you this, so that you might have peace in your hearts because of me. While you are in the world, you will have to suffer. But cheer up! I have defeated the world.

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
