John 5:35-44 GNB
John was like a lamp, burning and shining, and you were willing for a while to enjoy his light. (36) But I have a witness on my behalf which is even greater than the witness that John gave: what I do, that is, the deeds my Father gave me to do, these speak on my behalf and show that the Father has sent me. (37) And the Father, who sent me, also testifies on my behalf. [Mat 3:13-17] You have never heard his voice or seen his face, (38) and you do not keep his message in your hearts, for you do not believe in the one whom he sent. (39) You study the Scriptures, because you think that in them you will find eternal life. And these very Scriptures speak about me! (40) Yet you are not willing to come to me in order to have life. (41) "I am not looking for human praise. (42) But I know what kind of people you are, and I know that you have no love for God in your hearts. (43) I have come with my Father's authority, but you have not received me; when, however, someone comes with his own authority, you will receive him. (44) You like to receive praise from one another, but you do not try to win praise from the one who alone is God; how, then, can you believe me?

John 5:35-44 CEV
(35) John was a lamp that gave a lot of light, and you were glad to enjoy his light for a while. (36) But something more important than John speaks for me. I mean the things that the Father has given me to do! All of these speak for me and prove that the Father sent me. (37) The Father who sent me also speaks for me, [Mat 3:13-17] but you have never heard his voice or seen him face to face. (38) You have not believed his message, because you refused to have faith in the one he sent. (39) You search the Scriptures, because you think you will find eternal life in them. The Scriptures tell about me, (40) but you refuse to come to me for eternal life. (41) I don't care about human praise, (42) but I do know that none of you love God. (43) I have come with my Father's authority, and you have not welcomed me. But you will welcome people who come on their own. (44) How could you possibly believe? You like to have your friends praise you, and you don't care about praise that the only God can give!

John 5:35-44 ALT
(35) "That one was the burning and shining lamp, but you were pleased to be very glad for an hour [or, for a while] in his light. (36) "But _I_ have the testimony greater than John's, for the works which the Father gave to Me that I should finish them, the works themselves which _I_ am doing, they testify concerning Me that the Father has sent Me. (37) "And the Father having sent Me, [He] Himself has testified concerning Me. [Mat 3:13-17] Neither have you* heard His voice at any time nor have you* seen His form. (38) And you* [do] not have His word remaining in you*, because whom that One sent, this One you* do not believe. (39) "You* search the Scriptures, because you* think in them to be having eternal life, and these they are which testify concerning Me. (40) "And you* are not willing to come to Me so that you* shall have life. (41) "I do not receive glory from people. (42) "_But_ I have known you*, that you* do not have the love of God in yourselves. (43) "_I_ have come in the Name of My Father, and you* do not receive Me. If another comes in his own name, that one you* will receive. (44) "How are _you*_ able to believe, while receiving glory from one another, and the glory that [is] from God alone you* do not seek?

John 5:35-44 NWT
35 That man was a burning and shining lamp, and YOU for a short time were willing to rejoice greatly in his light. 36 But I have the witness greater than that of John, for the very works that my Father assigned me to accomplish, the works themselves that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father dispatched me. 37 Also, the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. [Mat 3:13-17] You have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his figure; 38 and you do not have his word remaining in you, because the very one whom he dispatched you do not believe. 39 "You are searching the Scriptures, because you think that by means of them you will have everlasting life; and these are the very ones that bear witness about me. 40 And yet you do not want to come to me that you may have life. 41 I do not accept glory from men, 42 but I well know that you do not have the love of God in you. 43 I have come in the name of my Father, but you do not receive me; if someone else arrived in his own name, you would receive that one. 44 How can you believe, when you are accepting glory from one another and you are not seeking the glory that is from the only God?

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
The Translations we quote are:

ALT - Analytical Literal Translation

ASV - American Standard Version (by the American revision committee in 1897).
