John 7:40-49 CEV When the crowd heard Jesus say this, some of them said, "He must be the Prophet!" (41) Others said, "He is the Messiah!" Others even said, "Can the Messiah come from Galilee? (42) The Scriptures say that the Messiah will come from the family of King David. Doesn't this mean that he will be born in David's hometown of Bethlehem?" (43) The people started taking sides against each other because of Jesus. (44) Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him. (45) When the temple police returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, they were asked, "Why didn't you bring Jesus here?" (46) They answered, "No one has ever spoken like that man!" (47) The Pharisees said to them, "Have you also been fooled? (48) Not one of the chief priests or the Pharisees has faith in him. (49) And these people who don't know the Law are under God's curse anyway."

John 7:40-49 GNB Some of the people in the crowd heard him say this and said, "This man is really the Prophet!" (41) Others said, "He is the Messiah!" But others said, "The Messiah will not come from Galilee! (42) The scripture says that the Messiah will be a descendant of King David and will be born in Bethlehem, the town where David lived." (43) So there was a division in the crowd because of Jesus. (44) Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. (45) When the guards went back, the chief priests and Pharisees asked them, "Why did you not bring him?" (46) The guards answered, "Nobody has ever talked the way this man does!" (47) "Did he fool you, too?" the Pharisees asked them. (48) "Have you ever known one of the authorities or one Pharisee to believe in him? (49) This crowd does not know the Law of Moses, so they are under God's curse!"

John 7:40-49 GW After some of the crowd heard Jesus say these words, they said, "This man is certainly the prophet." (41) Other people said, "This man is the Messiah." Still other people asked, "How can the Messiah come from Galilee? (42) Doesn't Scripture say that the Messiah will come from the descendants of David and from the village of Bethlehem, where David lived?" (43) So the people were divided because of Jesus. (44) Some of them wanted to arrest him, but they couldn't. (45) When the temple guards returned, the chief priests and Pharisees asked them, "Why didn't you bring Jesus?" (46) The temple guards answered, "No human has ever spoken like this man." (47) The Pharisees asked the temple guards, "Have you been deceived too? (48) Has any ruler or any Pharisee believed in him? (49) This crowd is cursed because it doesn't know Moses' Teachings."

John 7:40-49 ESV When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This really is the Prophet." (41) Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? (42) Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" (43) So there was a division among the people over him. (44) Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. (45) The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" (46) The officers answered, "No one ever spoke like this man!" (47) The Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived? (48) Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? (49) But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed."

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
