Mark 7:1-9 CEV
(1) Some Pharisees and several teachers of the Law of Moses from Jerusalem came and gathered around Jesus. (2) They noticed that some of his disciples ate without first washing their hands. (3) The Pharisees and many other Jewish people obey the teachings of their ancestors. They always wash their hands in the proper way before eating. (4) None of them will eat anything they buy in the market until it is washed. They also follow a lot of other teachings, such as washing cups, pitchers, and bowls. (5) The Pharisees and teachers asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples obey what our ancestors taught us to do? Why do they eat without washing their hands?" (6) Jesus replied: You are nothing but show-offs! The prophet Isaiah was right when he wrote that God had said, "All of you praise me with your words, but you never really think about me. (7) It is useless for you to worship me, when you teach rules made up by humans." [Isaiah 29:13, LXX] (8) You disobey God's commands in order to obey what humans have taught. (9) You are good at rejecting God's commands so that you can follow your own teachings!

(1) And there came together to him the Pharisees and certain of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, (2) And had seen that some of his disciples took their bread with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. (3) Now the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not take food without washing their hands with care, keeping the old rule which has been handed down to them: (4) And when they come from the market-place, they take no food till their hands are washed; and a number of other orders there are, which have been handed down to them to keep--washings of cups and pots and brass vessels. (5) And the Pharisees and the scribes put the question to him, Why do your disciples not keep the rules of the fathers, but take their bread with unwashed hands? (6) And he said, Well did Isaiah say of you, you false ones: These people give me honour with their lips, but their heart is far from me. (7) But their worship is to no purpose, while they give as their teaching the rules of men. [Isaiah 29:13] (8) For, turning away from the law of God, you keep the rules of men. (9) And he said to them, Truly you put on one side the law of God, so that you may keep the rules which have been handed down to you.

(2) And having seen some of His disciples eating bread with defiled [or, ceremonially unclean] hands-that is, not ritually washed-they found fault. (3) For the Pharisees and all the Jews, if they do not wash their hands with [the] fist [fig., in the proper manner], do not eat, keeping the tradition of the elders. (4) And [coming] from the marketplace, unless they baptize [or, ceremonially wash] themselves, they do not eat, and many other [traditions there] are which they received [and] are keeping: [like] baptisms [or, ceremonial washings] of cups and pitchers and brazen vessels and cots. (5) Afterwards the Pharisees and the scribes ask Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk about [fig., conduct themselves] according to the tradition of the elders? _But_ they eat their bread with ritually unwashed hands." (6) But answering, He said to them, "Correctly did Isaiah prophesy concerning you*, the hypocrites! As it has been written, 'This people honors Me with their lips [fig., words], but their heart is far distant from Me. (7) 'But in vain [or, to no purpose] do they worship Me, teaching [as] teachings [or, doctrines] [the] commandments of people.' [Isaiah 29:13, LXX] (8) For having left behind [or, having neglected] the commandment of God, you* keep the tradition of people: baptisms [or, ceremonial washings] of pitchers and cups, and many such other similar things you* do." (9) And He was saying to them, "[All too] well do you* regard as nothing the commandment of God, so that you* should keep your* tradition.

7 Now the Pharisees and some of the scribes that had come from Jerusalem gathered about him. 2 And when they saw some of his disciples eat their meal with defiled hands, that is, unwashed ones- 3 for the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands up to the elbow, holding fast the tradition of the men of former times, 4 and, when back from market, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves by sprinkling; and there are many other traditions that they have received to hold fast, baptisms of cups and pitchers and copper vessels;- 5 so these Pharisees and scribes asked him: "Why is it your disciples do not conduct themselves according to the tradition of the men of former times, but they take their meal with defiled hands?" 6 He said to them: "Isaiah aptly prophesied about you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honor me with [their] lips, but their hearts are far removed from me. 7 It is in vain that they keep worshiping me, because they teach as doctrines commands of men.' 8 Letting go the commandment of God, you hold fast the tradition of men." 9 Further, he went on to say to them: "Adroitly you set aside the commandment of God in order to retain your tradition.
