Numbers 15:27-16:50 GNB If any of you sin unintentionally, you are to offer a one-year-old female goat as a sin offering. (28) At the altar the priest shall perform the ritual of purification to purify you from your sin, and you will be forgiven. (29) The same regulation applies to all who unintentionally commit a sin, whether they are native Israelites or resident foreigners. (30) But any who sin deliberately, whether they are natives or foreigners, are guilty of treating the LORD   () with contempt, and they shall be put to death, (31) because they have rejected what the LORD  () said and have deliberately broken one of his commands. They are responsible for their own death. (32) Once, while the Israelites were still in the wilderness, a man was found gathering firewood on the Sabbath. (33) He was taken to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community, (34) and was put under guard, because it was not clear what should be done with him. (35) Then the LORD  () said to Moses, "The man must be put to death; the whole community is to stone him to death outside the camp." (36) So the whole community took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD  () had commanded. (37) The LORD  () commanded Moses (38) to say to the people of Israel: "Make tassels on the corners of your garments and put a blue cord on each tassel. You are to do this for all time to come. (39) The tassels will serve as reminders, and each time you see them you will remember all my commands and obey them; then you will not turn away from me and follow your own wishes and desires. (40) The tassels will remind you to keep all my commands, and you will belong completely to me. (41) I am the LORD  () your God; I brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD  ()."
Numbers 16:1-50 GNB Korah son of Izhar, from the Levite clan of Kohath, rebelled against the leadership of Moses. He was joined by three members of the tribe of Reuben---Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth---and by 250 other Israelites, well-known leaders chosen by the community. (2) (SEE 16:1) (3) They assembled before Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! All the members of the community belong to the LORD  (), and the LORD  () is with all of us. Why, then, Moses, do you set yourself above the LORD  ()'s community?" (4) When Moses heard this, he threw himself on the ground and prayed. (5) Then he said to Korah and his followers, "Tomorrow morning the LORD  () will show us who belongs to him; he will let the one who belongs to him, that is, the one he has chosen, approach him at the altar. (6) Tomorrow morning you and your followers take fire pans, put live coals and incense on them, and take them to the altar. Then we will see which of us the LORD  () has chosen. You Levites are the ones who have gone too far!" (7) (SEE 16:6) (8) Moses continued to speak to Korah. "Listen, you Levites! (9) Do you consider it a small matter that the God of Israel has set you apart from the rest of the community, so that you can approach him, perform your service in the LORD  ()'s Tent, and minister to the community and serve them? (10) He has let you and all the other Levites have this honor---and now you are trying to get the priesthood too! (11) When you complain against Aaron, it is really against the LORD  () that you and your followers are rebelling." (12) Then Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, but they said, "We will not come! (13) Isn't it enough that you have brought us out of the fertile land of Egypt to kill us here in the wilderness? Do you also have to lord it over us? (14) You certainly have not brought us into a fertile land or given us fields and vineyards as our possession, and now you are trying to deceive us. We will not come!" (15) Moses became angry and said to the LORD  (), "Do not accept any offerings these men bring. I have not wronged any of them; I have not even taken one of their donkeys." (16) Moses said to Korah, "Tomorrow you and your 250 followers must come to the Tent of the LORD  ()'s presence; Aaron will also be there. (17) Each of you will take his fire pan, put incense on it, and then present it at the altar." (18) So they each took their fire pans, put live coals and incense on them, and stood at the entrance of the Tent with Moses and Aaron. (19) Then Korah gathered the whole community, and they stood facing Moses and Aaron at the entrance of the Tent. Suddenly the dazzling light of the LORD  ()'s presence appeared to the whole community, (20) and the LORD  () said to Moses and Aaron, (21) "Move back from these people, and I will destroy them immediately." (22) But Moses and Aaron bowed down with their faces to the ground and said, "O God, you are the source of all life. When one of us sins, do you become angry with the whole community?" (23) The LORD  () said to Moses, (24) "Tell the people to move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram." (25) Then Moses, accompanied by the leaders of Israel, went to Dathan and Abiram. (26) He said to the people, "Get away from the tents of these wicked men and don't touch anything that belongs to them. Otherwise, you will be wiped out with them for all their sins." (27) So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing at the entrance of their tents, with their wives and children. (28) Moses said to the people, "This is how you will know that the LORD  () has sent me to do all these things and that it is not by my own choice that I have done them. (29) If these men die a natural death without some punishment from God, then the LORD  () did not send me. (30) But if the LORD  () does something unheard of, and the earth opens up and swallows them with all they own, so that they go down alive to the world of the dead, you will know that these men have rejected the LORD  ()." (31) As soon as he had finished speaking, the ground under Dathan and Abiram split open (32) and swallowed them and their families, together with all of Korah's followers and their possessions. (33) So they went down alive to the world of the dead, with their possessions. The earth closed over them, and they vanished. (34) All the people of Israel who were there fled when they heard their cry. They shouted, "Run! The earth might swallow us too!" (35) Then the LORD  () sent a fire that blazed out and burned up the 250 men who had presented the incense. (36) Then the LORD  () said to Moses, (37) "Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to remove the bronze fire pans from the remains of those who have been burned, and scatter the coals from the fire pans somewhere else, because the fire pans are holy. (38) They became holy when they were presented at the LORD  ()'s altar. So take the fire pans of these who were put to death for their sin, beat them into thin plates, and make a covering for the altar. It will be a warning to the people of Israel." (39) So Eleazar the priest took the fire pans and had them beaten into thin plates to make a covering for the altar. (40) This was a warning to the Israelites that no one who was not a descendant of Aaron should come to the altar to burn incense for the LORD  (). Otherwise he would be destroyed like Korah and his men. All this was done as the LORD  () had commanded Eleazar through Moses. (41) The next day the whole community complained against Moses and Aaron and said, "You have killed some of the LORD  ()'s people." (42) After they had all gathered to protest to Moses and Aaron, they turned toward the Tent and saw that the cloud was covering it and that the dazzling light of the LORD  ()'s presence had appeared. (43) Moses and Aaron went and stood in front of the Tent, (44) and the LORD  () said to Moses, (45) "Move back from these people, and I will destroy them on the spot!" The two of them bowed down with their faces to the ground, (46) and Moses said to Aaron, "Take your fire pan, put live coals from the altar in it, and put some incense on the coals. Then hurry with it to the people and perform the ritual of purification for them. Hurry! The LORD  ()'s anger has already broken out and an epidemic has already begun." (47) Aaron obeyed, took his fire pan and ran into the middle of the assembled people. When he saw that the plague had already begun, he put the incense on the coals and performed the ritual of purification for the people. (48) This stopped the plague, and he was left standing between the living and the dead. (49) The number of people who died was 14,700, not counting those who died in Korah's rebellion. (50) When the plague had stopped, Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the Tent.
Numbers 15:27-16:50 GW "If one person unintentionally does something wrong, a one-year-old female goat must be sacrificed as an offering for sin. (28) The priest will offer the sacrifice to make peace with the LORD  () for that person, and that person will be forgiven. (29) You must give the same instructions to everyone who does something wrong unintentionally, whether they are native-born Israelites or not. (30) "But any native-born Israelite or foreigner who deliberately does something wrong insults the LORD  () and must be excluded from the people. (31) That person has despised the word of the LORD  () and broken the LORD  ()'S command. He must be excluded completely. He remains guilty." (32) While the Israelites were in the desert, they found a man gathering wood on the day of worship. (33) Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole community. (34) They kept him in custody until they decided what to do with him. (35) Then the LORD  () said to Moses, "This man must be put to death. The whole community must take him outside the camp and stone him." (36) So the whole community took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD  () commanded Moses. (37) The LORD  () said to Moses, (38) "Speak to the Israelites and tell them: For generations to come they must wear tassels on the corners of their clothes with violet threads in each tassel. (39) Whenever you look at the threads in the tassel, you will remember all the LORD  ()'S commands and obey them. Then you won't do whatever you want and go after whatever you see, as if you were chasing after prostitutes. (40) You will remember to obey all my commands, and you will be holy to your God. (41) I am the LORD  () your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD  () your God."
Numbers 16:1-50 GW Korah (son of Izhar), Dathan and Abiram (sons of Eliab), and On (son of Peleth) dared to challenge Moses. (Korah was a descendant of Kohath and Levi. Dathan, Abiram, and On were descendants of Reuben.) (2) These four men were joined by 250 Israelite men, well-known leaders of the community, chosen by the assembly. (3) They came together to confront Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You've gone far enough! Everyone in the whole community is holy, and the LORD  () is among them. Why do you set yourselves above the LORD  ()'S assembly?" (4) As soon as Moses heard this, he bowed with his face touching the ground. (5) Then he said to Korah and all his followers, "In the morning the LORD  () will show who belongs to him, who is holy, and who it is that he will allow to come near him. Only the person the LORD  () chooses will be allowed to come near him. (6) Korah, you and all your followers must do this tomorrow: Take incense burners, (7) and put burning coals and incense in them in the LORD  ()'S presence. Then the LORD  () will choose the man who is holy. You've gone far enough!" (8) Moses also said to Korah, "Listen, you Levites! (9) Isn't it enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the community of Israel? The LORD  () has brought you near himself to do the work for his tent and stand in front of the community to serve them. (10) He has brought you and all the other Levites near himself, but now you demand to be priests. (11) So you and all your followers have joined forces against the LORD  ()! Who is Aaron that you should complain about him?" (12) Then Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab. But they said, "We won't come! (13) Isn't it enough that you brought us out of a land flowing with milk and honey only to kill us in the desert? Do you also have to order us around? (14) Certainly you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us any fields and vineyards to own. Do you think you can still pull the wool over our eyes? We won't come." (15) Moses became angry and said to the LORD  (), "Don't accept their offering. I haven't taken anything from them, not even a donkey. And I haven't mistreated any of them." (16) Moses said to Korah, "Tomorrow you and all your followers must come into the LORD  ()'S presence. Aaron will also be there with you. (17) Each man will take his incense burner and put incense in it. They will offer all 250 incense burners to the LORD  (). Then you and Aaron offer your incense burners." (18) So each man took his incense burner, put burning coals and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting. (19) When Korah had gathered all his followers-those who opposed Moses and Aaron-at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the glory of the LORD  () appeared to the whole group. (20) The LORD  () said to Moses and Aaron, (21) "Move away from these men, and I'll destroy them in an instant." (22) Immediately, they bowed with their faces touching the ground and said, "O God, you are the God who gives the breath of life to everyone! If one man sins, will you be angry with the whole community?" (23) Then the LORD  () said to Moses, (24) "Tell the community: Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram." (25) Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the leaders of Israel followed him. (26) He said to the community, "Move away from the tents of these wicked men. Don't touch anything that belongs to them, or you'll be swept away because of all their sins." (27) So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing at the entrances to their tents with their wives and children. (28) Moses said, "This is how you will know that the LORD  () sent me to do all these things and that it wasn't my idea: (29) If these men die like all other people-if they die a natural death-then the LORD  () hasn't sent me. (30) But if the LORD  () does something totally new-if the ground opens up, swallows them and everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive to their graves-then you'll know that these men have treated the LORD  () with contempt." (31) As soon as he had finished saying all this, the ground under them split, (32) and the earth opened up to swallow them, their families, the followers of Korah, and all their property. (33) They went down alive to their graves with everything that belonged to them. The ground covered them, and so they disappeared from the assembly. (34) All the Israelites around them ran away when they heard their screams. They thought the ground would swallow them, too. (35) Fire came from the LORD  () and consumed the 250 men who were offering incense. (36) Then the LORD  () said to Moses, (37) "Tell Eleazar, son of the priest Aaron, to take the incense burners out of the fire and scatter the coals and incense somewhere else, because the incense burners have become holy. (38) The incense burners of these men who sinned and lost their lives are holy, because they were offered to the LORD  (). Hammer them into thin metal sheets to cover the altar. This will be a sign to the Israelites." (39) So the priest Eleazar took the bronze incense burners which had been brought by those who had been burned to death. The incense burners were then hammered into thin metal sheets to cover the altar, (40) following the command that the LORD  () had given through Moses. The bronze-covered altar will remind Israel that no one but a descendant of Aaron can come near to burn incense to the LORD  (). Everyone else will die like Korah and his followers. (41) The next day the whole community of Israel complained to Moses and Aaron. They said, "You have killed the LORD  ()'S people." (42) The community came together to confront Moses and Aaron. When they turned toward the tent of meeting, they saw the smoke covering it, and the glory of the LORD  () appeared. (43) Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the tent of meeting. (44) The LORD  () said to Moses, (45) "Get away from these people, and let me destroy them in an instant!" Immediately, they bowed with their faces touching the ground. (46) Moses said to Aaron, "Take your incense burner, put burning coals from the altar and incense in it, and go quickly into the community to make peace with the LORD  () for the people. The LORD  () is showing his anger; a plague has started." (47) Aaron took his incense burner, as Moses told him, and ran into the middle of the assembly, because the plague had already begun among the people. He put incense on the incense burner to make peace with the LORD  () for the people. (48) He stood between those who had died and those who were still alive, and the plague stopped. (49) Still, 14,700 died from the plague in addition to those who had died because of Korah. (50) By the time Aaron came back to Moses at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the plague had stopped.
Numbers 15:27-16:50 NWT 27 “‘And if any soul should sin by mistake, then he must present a female goat in its first year for a sin offering. 28 And the priest must make atonement for the soul who made a mistake by a sin unintentionally before Jehovah  (), so as to make atonement for it, and it must be forgiven him. 29 As to the native among the sons of Israel and the alien resident who is residing as an alien in their midst, there should prove to be one law for YOU as respects doing something unintentionally. 30 “‘But the soul that does something deliberately, whether he is a native or an alien resident, he speaking abusively of Jehovah  (), in that case that soul must be cut off from among his people. 31 Because it is Jehovah  ()’s word that he has despised and his commandment that he has broken, that soul should be cut off without fail. His own error is upon him.’” 32 While the sons of Israel were continuing in the wilderness, they once found a man collecting pieces of wood on the sabbath day. 33 Then those who found him collecting pieces of wood brought him up to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly. 34 So they committed him into custody, because it had not been distinctly stated what should be done to him. 35 In time Jehovah  () said to Moses: “Without fail the man should be put to death, the whole assembly pelting him with stones outside the camp.” 36 Accordingly the whole assembly brought him forth outside the camp and pelted him with stones so that he died, just as Jehovah  () had commanded Moses. 37 And Jehovah  () went on to say this to Moses: 38 “Speak to the sons of Israel, and you must say to them that they must make for themselves fringed edges upon the skirts of their garments throughout their generations, and they must put a blue string above the fringed edge of the skirt, 39 ‘And it must serve as a fringed edge for YOU, and YOU must see it and remember all the commandments of Jehovah  () and do them, and YOU must not go about following YOUR hearts and YOUR eyes, which YOU are following in immoral intercourse. 40 The purpose is that YOU may remember and may certainly do all my commandments and indeed prove to be holy to YOUR God. 41 I am Jehovah  () YOUR God, who have brought YOU out of the land of Egypt in order to prove myself YOUR God. I am Jehovah  () YOUR God.’”
16:1 And Ko´rah the son of Iz´har, the son of Ko´hath, the son of Le´vi, proceeded to get up, together with Da´than and A·bi´ram the sons of E·li´ab, and On the son of Pe´leth, the sons of Reu´ben. 2 And they proceeded to rise up before Moses, they and two hundred and fifty men of the sons of Israel, chieftains of the assembly, summoned ones of the meeting, men of fame. 3 So they congregated themselves against Moses and Aaron and said to them: “That is enough of YOU, because the whole assembly are all of them holy and Jehovah  () is in their midst. Why, then, should YOU lift yourselves up above the congregation of Jehovah  ()?” 4 When Moses got to hear it he at once fell upon his face. 5 Then he spoke to Ko´rah and to his entire assembly, saying: “In the morning Jehovah  () will make known who belongs to him and who is holy and who must come near to him, and whoever he may choose will come near to him. 6 Do this: Take fire holders for yourselves, Ko´rah and his entire assembly, 7 and put fire in them and place incense upon them before Jehovah  () tomorrow, and it must occur that the man whom Jehovah  () will choose, he is the holy one. That is enough of YOU, YOU sons of Le´vi!” 8 And Moses went on to say to Ko´rah: “Listen, please, YOU sons of Le´vi. 9 Is it such a little thing for YOU men that the God of Israel has separated YOU men from the assembly of Israel to present YOU to himself to carry on the service of Jehovah  ()’s tabernacle and to stand before the assembly to minister to them, 10 and that he should bring you and all your brothers the sons of Le´vi with you near? So must YOU men also try to secure the priesthood? 11 For that reason you and all your assembly who are gathering together are against Jehovah  (). As for Aaron, what is he that YOU men should murmur against him?” 12 Later Moses sent to call Da´than and A·bi´ram the sons of E·li´ab, but they said: “We are not going to come up! 13 Is it so little a thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to put us to death in the wilderness, that you should also try to play the prince over us to the limit? 14 As it is, you have not brought us into any land flowing with milk and honey, that you may give us an inheritance of field and vineyard. Is it the eyes of those men that you want to bore out? We are not going to come up!” 15 At this Moses became very angry and said to Jehovah  (): “Do not turn to look at their grain offering. Not one male ass have I taken away from them, nor have I harmed one of them.” 16 Then Moses said to Ko´rah: “You and all your assembly, be present before Jehovah  (), you and they and Aaron, tomorrow. 17 And take each one his fire holder, and YOU men must put incense upon them and present each one his fire holder before Jehovah  (), two hundred and fifty fire holders, and you and Aaron each his fire holder.” 18 So they took each one his fire holder and put fire upon them and placed incense upon them and stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting together with Moses and Aaron. 19 When Ko´rah got all the assembly together against them at the entrance of the tent of meeting, then Jehovah  ()’s glory appeared to all the assembly. 20 Jehovah  () now spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 21 “Separate yourselves from the midst of this assembly, that I may exterminate them in an instant.” 22 At this they fell upon their faces and said: “O God, the God of the spirits of every sort of flesh, will just one man sin and you become indignant against the entire assembly?” 23 In turn Jehovah  () spoke to Moses, saying: 24 “Speak to the assembly, saying, ‘Get away from around the tabernacles of Ko´rah, Da´than and A·bi´ram!’” 25 After that Moses got up and went to Da´than and A·bi´ram, and the older men of Israel went with him. 26 Then he spoke to the assembly, saying: “Turn aside, please, from before the tents of these wicked men and do not touch anything that belongs to them, that YOU may not be swept away in all their sin.” 27 Immediately they got away from before the tabernacle of Ko´rah, Da´than and A·bi´ram, from every side, and Da´than and A·bi´ram came out, taking their stand at the entrance of their tents, together with their wives, and their sons and their little ones. 28 Then Moses said: “By this YOU will know that Jehovah  () has sent me to do all these deeds, that it is not of my own heart: 29 If it is according to the death of all mankind that these people will die and with the punishment of all mankind that punishment will be brought upon them, then it is not Jehovah  () that has sent me. 30 But if it is something created that Jehovah  () will create, and the ground has to open its mouth and swallow up them and everything that belongs to them and they have to go down alive into She´ol, YOU will then know for certain that these men have treated Jehovah  () disrespectfully.” 31 And it came about that as soon as he had finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them began to be split apart. 32 And the earth proceeded to open its mouth and to swallow up them and their households and all humankind that belonged to Ko´rah and all the goods. 33 So down they went, and all who belonged to them, alive into She´ol, and the earth went covering them over, so that they perished from the midst of the congregation. 34 And all the Israelites who were round about them fled at the screaming of them, for they began to say: “We are afraid that the earth may swallow us up!” 35 And a fire came out from Jehovah  () and proceeded to consume the two hundred and fifty men offering the incense. 36 Jehovah  () now spoke to Moses, saying: 37 “Say to El·e·a´zar the son of Aaron the priest that he should take up the fire holders from within the conflagration, ‘And you scatter the fire over there; for they are holy, 38 even the fire holders of these men who sinned against their own souls. And they must make them into thin metal plates as an overlaying for the altar, because they presented them before Jehovah  (), so that they became holy; and they should serve as a sign to the sons of Israel.’” 39 Accordingly El·e·a´zar the priest took the copper fire holders, which those who had been burned up had presented, and they proceeded to beat them out into an overlaying for the altar, 40 as a memorial for the sons of Israel, to the end that no strange man who is not of the offspring of Aaron should come near to make incense smoke before Jehovah  (), and no one might become like Ko´rah and his assembly, just as Jehovah  () had spoken to him by means of Moses. 41 And directly the next day the whole assembly of the sons of Israel began to murmur against Moses and Aaron, saying: “YOU men, YOU have put Jehovah  ()’s people to death.” 42 And it came about that when the assembly had congregated themselves together against Moses and Aaron, they then turned toward the tent of meeting; and, look! the cloud covered it, and Jehovah  ()’s glory began to appear. 43 And Moses and Aaron proceeded to come before the tent of meeting. 44 Then Jehovah  () spoke to Moses, saying: 45 “YOU men, rise up from the midst of this assembly, that I may exterminate them in an instant.” At this they fell upon their faces. 46 After that Moses said to Aaron: “Take the fire holder and put fire from upon the altar in it and put on incense and go to the assembly in a hurry and make atonement for them, because the indignation has gone out from the face of Jehovah  (). The plague has started!” 47 Aaron at once took it, just as Moses had spoken, and went running into the midst of the congregation; and, look! the plague had started among the people. So he put the incense on and began making atonement for the people. 48 And he kept standing between the dead and the living. Eventually the scourge was stopped. 49 And those dead from the scourge amounted to fourteen thousand seven hundred, aside from those dead on account of Ko´rah. 50 When at last Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, the scourge had been stopped.

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
