Romans 6:16-23 GNB Surely you know that when you surrender yourselves as slaves to obey someone, you are in fact the slaves of the master you obey---either of sin, which results in death, or of obedience (to Christ - John 6:28-29; 1 John 3:19-4:10), which results in being put right with God. (17) But thanks be to God! For though at one time you were slaves to sin, you have obeyed with all your heart the truths found in the teaching you received. (18) You were set free from sin (John 8:31-32) and became the slaves of righteousness. (19) (I use everyday language because of the weakness of your natural selves.) At one time you surrendered yourselves entirely as slaves to impurity and wickedness for wicked purposes. In the same way you must now surrender yourselves entirely as slaves of righteousness for holy purposes. (20) When you were the slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness. (21) What did you gain from doing the things that you are now ashamed of ? The result of those things is death! (22) But now you have been set free from sin and are the slaves of God. Your gain is a life fully dedicated to him, and the result is eternal life. (23) For sin pays its wage---death; but God's free gift is eternal life in union with Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:16-23 GW Don't you know that if you offer to be someone's slave, you must obey that master? Either your master is sin, or your master is obedience. Letting sin be your master leads to death. Letting obedience (to Christ - John 6:28-29; 1 John 3:19-4:10) be your master leads to God's approval. (17) You were slaves to sin. But I thank God that you have become wholeheartedly obedient to the teachings which you were given. (18) Freed from sin, (John 8:31-32) you were made slaves who do what God approves of. (19) I'm speaking in a human way because of the weakness of your corrupt nature. Clearly, you once offered all the parts of your body as slaves to sexual perversion and disobedience. This led you to live disobedient lives. Now, in the same way, offer all the parts of your body as slaves that do what God approves of. This leads you to live holy lives. (20) When you were slaves to sin, you were free from doing what God approves of. (21) What did you gain by doing those things? You're ashamed of what you used to do because it ended in death. (22) Now you have been freed from sin and have become God's slaves. This results in a holy life and, finally, in everlasting life.
(23) GW The payment for sin is death, but the gift that God freely gives is everlasting life found in Christ Jesus our Lord.

You used to let the different parts of your body be slaves of your evil thoughts. But now you must make every part of your body serve God, so that you will belong completely to him. (20) When you were slaves of sin, you didn't have to please God. (21) But what good did you receive from the things you did? All you have to show for them is your shame, and they lead to death. (22) Now you have been set free from sin, and you are God's slaves. This will make you holy and will lead you to eternal life. (23) Sin pays off with death. But God's gift is eternal life given by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:16-23 NWT . . .Do YOU not know that if YOU keep presenting yourselves to anyone as slaves to obey him, YOU are slaves of him because YOU obey him, either of sin with death in view or of obedience with righteousness in view? 17 But thanks to God that YOU were the slaves of sin but YOU became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which YOU were handed over (from Christ - John 6:28-29; 1 John 3:19-4:10). 18 Yes, since YOU were set free from sin, (John 8:31-32) YOU became slaves to righteousness. 19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of YOUR flesh: for even as YOU presented YOUR members as slaves to uncleanness and lawlessness with lawlessness in view, so now present YOUR members as slaves to righteousness with holiness in view. 20 For when YOU were slaves of sin, YOU were free as to righteousness. 21 What, then, was the fruit that YOU used to have at that time? Things of which YOU are now ashamed. For the end of those things is death. 22 However, now, because YOU were set free from sin but became slaves to God, YOU are having YOUR fruit in the way of holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord.
