--- Tax Collectors! ---

It is not possible to understand what the scriptures that talk about tax collectors mean without knowing who and what those men were in Jesus's day. The ancient Jewish nation was subject to Rome when Jesus lived. They hated to pay taxes to the Roman state and the tax collectors were often Jews who served the occupying power to collect tax from their Jewish brothers. Since that ancient Jewish nation was structured around their worship of   יהוה   , the tax collectors were looked down on as terrible unscrupulous people, and as apostates to their Jewish form of worship. It is hard to imagine anyone being more despised or looked down on than a tax collector when Jesus lived.
