Revelation 20:1-3 GNB ...Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key of the abyss and a heavy chain. (2) He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent---that is, the Devil, or Satan---and chained him up for a thousand years. (3) The angel threw him into the abyss, locked it, and sealed it, so that he could not deceive the nations any more until the thousand years were over. After that he must be set loose for a little while.
Could this thousand years relate to Revelation 12:7-12 where Satan was thrown out of heaven. Being restricted from heaven would certainly have seemed an abyss to Satan. His being unable to deceive the nations might equate with the time ending the Dark Ages when protestants were used or allowed by God to end the dark churches iron rule of the earth.

(2) He overpowered the serpent, that ancient snake, named Devil and Satan. The angel chained up the serpent for 1,000 years. (3) He threw it into the bottomless pit. The angel shut and sealed the pit over the serpent to keep it from deceiving the nations anymore until the 1,000 years were over. After that it must be set free for a little while.
