How will the wicked die for (in place of) the righteous? The Bible says the soul that is sinning will die, but that the son will not die for the error of the father, or the father die for the sins of the son. (Ezekiel 18:20) That scripture makes clear each wicked one will die for his own error. The Bible further teaches Jesus is the ransom sacrifice for our sins: That he died in place of each of us. (John 3:16 ; Ephesians 5:1-2 ; Acts 4:12)
The Bible goes on to say at Proverbs 21:18 that "The wicked is a ransom for the righteous one; and the one dealing treacherously takes the place of the upright ones." If Christ provides the ransom sacrifice for all of us, how does the wicked take the place of the righteous?
Most tend to think of destruction coming upon the earth during the great tribulation as a retribution by God. It rather appears God has been extending protection to mankind. (Revelation 7:1-3) Man has been disobeying God and harming the earth so long, he has needed protection by God against himself. All mankind is being judged today based on our response to the teachings of Jesus. As that judgment period comes to a close, God will remove the protection he has had in place. He will of course continue to protect the righteous. Wicked ones will die at the hand of each other, and by God's hand if they are trying to harm the righteous. Thus, the wicked will die in place of the righteous.
