Genesis 22:1-14 ESV After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here am I." (2) He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you." (3) So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. (4) On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. (5) Then Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you." (6) And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. (7) And Isaac said to his father Abraham, "My father!" And he said, "Here am I, my son." He said, "Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" (8) Abraham said, "God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So they went both of them together. (9) When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. (10) Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. (11) But the angel of the LORD ( יהוה ) called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here am I." (12) He said, "Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me." (13) And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. (14) So Abraham called the name of that place, "The LORD ( יהוה ) will provide"; as it is said to this day, "On the mount of the LORD ( יהוה ) it shall be provided."
Using Abraham, God teaches us about knowing him and about the wonderful gift of having him come to know us. Abraham loved and obeyed יהוה (Almighty God's personal Name) all his life. At about 100 years of age, why would God test Abraham in this way. My personal opinion is (Danger, danger... Personal opinion; use with caution! - You can only safely rely on the words of Christ Jesus himself. - Wrong opinions of men can kill you! [Mat 15:9]) that Abraham had come to love Isaac and what Isaac represented very much. God had promised Abraham when he was young that by his seed all nations of the earth would be blessed. What an honor! Abraham loved that promise and blessing, as would anyone. How much, though? Maybe Abraham had gotten confused and started to love Isaac so much, he was in danger of loving the "good things" God gave to him more than God. By this test, God knew. [See verse 12 above.] So did Abraham! Even God can't know who we (you) are until we first make the choice who we are. [Deu 30:15-20] That free choice and our ignorance is why God has temporarily tolerated badness, [Acts 17:29-31] so those practicing wickedness can turn away from their wicked ways by listening to his son.

(3) And Abraham started up early in the morning and saddled his ass, and he took two of his youths with him, and his son Isaac. And he split wood for a burnt offering, and rose up and went to the place which God had said to him. (4) And on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from a distance. (5) And Abraham said to his young men, You stay here with the ass. I and the boy will go over there that we may worship and may return to you. (6) And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac; and he took the fire and the knife in his hand. And the two went together. (7) And Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, My father. And he said, Behold me. And he said, Behold, the fire and the wood! But where is the lamb for a burnt offering? (8) And Abraham said, My son, God will see to the lamb for Himself, for a burnt offering. And the two of them went together. (9) And they came to the place which God had said to him. And Abraham built there the altar, and arranged the wood. And he bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on the wood. (10) And Abraham put out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. (11) And the Angel of Jehovah ( יהוה ) called to him from the heavens and said, Abraham! Abraham! And he said, Behold me. (12) And He said, Do not lay your hand on the boy, nor do anything to him. For now I know that you are a God-fearer, and you have not withheld your son, your only one, from Me. (13) And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked. And behold! A ram behind him was entangled in a thicket by its horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it for a burnt offering instead of his son. (14) And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah ( יהוה ) Will See; so that it is said until this day, In the mount of Jehovah ( יהוה ) it will be seen.

The boy and I will go over there and worship, and then we will come back to you." (6) Abraham made Isaac carry the wood for the sacrifice, and he himself carried a knife and live coals for starting the fire. As they walked along together, (7) Isaac spoke up, "Father!" He answered, "Yes, my son?" Isaac asked, "I see that you have the coals and the wood, but where is the lamb for the sacrifice?" (8) Abraham answered, "God himself will provide one." And the two of them walked on together. (9) When they came to the place which God had told him about, Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. He tied up his son and placed him on the altar, on top of the wood. (10) Then he picked up the knife to kill him. (11) But the angel of the LORD ( יהוה ) called to him from heaven, "Abraham, Abraham!" He answered, "Yes, here I am." (12) "Don't hurt the boy or do anything to him," he said. "Now I know that you honor and obey God, because you have not kept back your only son from him." (13) Abraham looked around and saw a ram caught in a bush by its horns. He went and got it and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son. (14) Abraham named that place "The LORD ( יהוה ) Provides." And even today people say, "On the LORD ( יהוה ) 's mountain he provides."
