John 11:1-2 GNB A man named Lazarus, who lived in Bethany, became sick. Bethany was the town where Mary and her sister Martha lived. (2) (This Mary was the one who poured the perfume on the Lord's feet and wiped them with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was sick.) [Mat 26:6-7; Mark 14:3; John 12:1-3]

This anointing performed by Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, and recorded at John 11, is not to be confused with a somewhat similar event that took place about a year earlier and was recorded by Luke in 7:36-50; by the woman who was known to be a sinner [probably a prostitute]. Mary poured oil on Christ's head and feet in symbolic preparation for his burial just six days later.

John 11:1-2 ESV Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (2) It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.

John 11:1-2 GW Lazarus, who lived in Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived, was sick. (2) (Mary was the woman who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was the one who was sick.)

John 11:1-2 BBE Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. (2) The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.
